Transport driven 5 hours with trailer 'heavily damaged' in crash

Two drivers and the owner of the vehicle are facing charges

COCHRANE - A transport  with a trailer "heavily damaged" in a crash on Highway 11 was driven about five hours before being taken off the road by police. 

Just after 1 p.m. on Feb. 16, a commercial motor vehicle was involved in a crash on Highway 11 in the Jellicoe area, said James Bay OPP in a news release. The trailer was "heavily damaged" and the cab was damaged as well, said police.

A couple of days later, on Feb. 18, around 8:45 a.m., police received a report of the same CMV on the road in the Cochrane area. It's over a five-hour drive from the Jellicoe area, which is west of Geraldton, to Cochrane.

The vehicle was pulled over south of Cochrane. It's been taken out of service and the licence plates have been removed from the trailer, said OPP.

Three people have been charged.

The driver was a 27-year-old from Brampton who is charged with operating unsafe vehicle - commercial motor vehicle, failing to accurately complete a daily inspection report, failing to enter a defect into a daily inspection report, and driving a commercial motor vehicle with a major defect in it or in the drawn vehicle. 

Another driver, a 33-year-old from Brantford, is charged with operating unsafe vehicle - commercial motor vehicle, failing to accurately complete a daily inspection report, failing to enter a defect into a daily inspection report, and driving a commercial motor vehicle with a major defect in it or in the drawn vehicle. 

The owner of the transport from Winnipeg, Manitoba, is charged with two counts of operating unsafe vehicle - commercial motor vehicle, two counts of failing to accurately complete a daily inspection report, failing to enter a defect into a daily inspection report, and two counts of driving a commercial motor vehicle with a major defect in it or in the drawn vehicle. 

"Driving with major defects will not be tolerated as it risks the safety of the entire motoring public," said OPP in the news release.

"The OPP acknowledges and commends the many safe CMV drivers who contribute to safe Ontario roads."
