The trial of a Sault Ste. Marie engineer charged with criminal offences in connection with the collapse of the Elliot Lake mall four years ago that killed two women begins today at the courthouse.

Robert Wood is charged with two counts of negligence causing death and a single count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Wood, who was employed with the now-defunct Sault-based engineering firm of M.R. Wright and Associates, was charged in 2014.

The Algo Centre Mall's rooftop parking deck collapsed on June 23, 2012.

He conducted a structural condition inspection of the mall's leaking roof and parking deck on April 12, 2012.

Doloris Perrizzolo and Lucie Aylwin died  and dozens of people were injured when the parking deck collapsed.
