SAULT STE. MARIE — Seagull attacks have been preventing a Sault Ste. Marie business from getting its mail.
That's how Canada Post tells it, anyhow.
Craig Cartmill, of Lock City Monuments, said he was notified by letter late last month that his mail had been suspended because the carrier on his business's White Oak Drive route was "being attacked by seagulls."
Cartmill told SooToday that for a few days, his mail was only available via pickup at the downtown post office.
He said he works outside often, and hasn't encountered a safety issue.
"No way do they ever come close enough to hurt somebody," said Cartmill. "It's not an issue."
He said his part of the street isn't even the most seagull prone, and that a number of business received the same letter, but only on part of the street.
"With regards to the issue of the very protective seagulls, mail delivery was temporarily suspended to some businesses on White Oak Drive on June 28 due to safety concerns that were investigated by members of our local health and safety committee," Canada Post said via email statement to SooToday.
Cartmill and Canada Post have both confirmed that mail delivery has since been restored to his business.
Jamestown mail delivery back to daily service
Meanwhile, Canada Post says its regular mail delivery service will be resuming in the Jamestown neighbourhood Monday after its daily delivery was scaled back to weekly delivery May 28.
Canada Post says that mail delivery to Jamestown was suspended due to a "safety concern."
"We are unable to provide additional details about the incident," said Canada Post. "We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience."
Canada Post is advising the public to call its customer service department at 1-800-267-1177 if there are any issues with mail delivery locally.
