NEWS RELEASE

It’s almost that time of year again…Back To School! Parents may be more excited than the kids, but now is the time to speak to your children about safety.

Here are some tips to help you and your kids get the school year off to a great start.

Take a walk to school. Test out the route your child will take to school or the bus stop. Take the time to point out hazardous situations, and pick a safe haven for weather or other emergencies.

Explain the rules of the road, how to cross the road safely, and go over cycling safety if your child will be biking to school. The South Simcoe Police promote walking to school as a healthy alternative that reduces traffic and traffic related dangers around schools.

Stranger danger. Kids of any age can be taught the dangers of talking with strangers.  Develop a code word for family friends to use when picking up your child in an emergency situation. A code word only your child knows will ensure that your child knows that the person has your permission to interact with your kids.

Bullying. Knowledge is power when it comes to bullying. Reporting a bully to a teacher or other adult is the first step in ending it. Teach your child to stand up for themselves and to respect others. The school and police resource officers have programs in place that you can talk to your kids about.

We care about our communities, let’s keep everyone safe this school year!
