WEST NIPISSING -- A witness grabbed this photo of a fire that took place on First Nation’s land east of Sturgeon Falls on Saturday afternoon.

A witness says no one was in the building, which appears to be a garage that went up in flames on Veterans Road in Garden Village which runs parallel to Highway 17 and across the highway from the Laurentide Golf Club turnoff at Golf Course Road.

Witness John Ananda, who photographed the blaze, estimated that it took the West Nipissing Fire Department and the Jocko Point Volunteer Fire Department nearly an hour to respond to the Saturday afternoon fire.

However, other reports indicate the Jocko Point and Nipissing First Nation Volunteer Fire Departments arrived at the scene in less than 30 minutes.

Witnesses say the homeowner was burning brush and that fire got out of control.
