You know fire danger is extreme when you see signs like this!

'It's a little shocking. It made me sit back a bit when I first saw it'
20180704 fire warning don't fart
This sign has an unusual message about fire safety.

it's sometimes tough to get people's attention these days, but a tiny volunteer fire department in the town of Lorrain, north of Temagami has a novel way of getting its message across on its Facebook page.

There's a fire ban in Chief Ken White's area, as there is across most of the north, so this drives the point home.

"The bush is dry as can be," White told BayToday. "There's a complete fire ban."

The Lorrain Fire department is a very small, rural one but has won the Wildfire Community of the year in 2016 and 2017.

"We hold open houses and really push public education," explained White. "We don't have a lot of equipment so we try to prevent the fires.

White admits the Facebook photo is an attention grabber.

"It's a little shocking. It made me sit back a bit when I first saw it, but if it prevents one fire or saves one life, we're ahead of the game."

The picture actually comes from a town in the U.S. but fits perfectly in today's fire environment.

Meanwhile, the current Forest Fire Hazard Rating for the Village of South River and the Township of Machar is high says Risto Maki, Fire Chief.

"All fire permits are cancelled and fireworks are not permitted. Campfires of 18 cubic inches 0.03 cubic meters are permitted at this time but should be handled with extreme care."

North Bay had a ban as of 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Mike Bechard, Deputy Fire Chief tells BayToday, "It's been pretty dry and we have not had significant rainfall and there is none in the forecast."
