Ontario reports 130 new cases of COVID-19 today

Public Health Ontario has reported 130 new cases of COVID-19 today and more than double that number of recoveries. 

Today's update notes there have been 267 more cases moved to recovery status as they have passed 14 days since the onset of symptoms and are not hospitalized. 

The new cases reported today include 15 health care workers, and eight long-term care residents. The largest portion of cases (49) were reported in people between the ages of 20 and 39. 

Toronto Public Health reported the highest regional increase today with 42 cases reported, followed by Peel Public Health, which reported 26 new cases.

The province also confirmed six more deaths related to COVID-19, including one person between 40 and 59 and five people over the age of 80. Four of the deaths confirmed today were long-term care residents and one was a health care worker. 

Public Health Ontario has reported 2,716 deaths (7.4 per cent of all cases) linked to the coronavirus since March, and has confirmed a total of 36,594 cases. There are now 32,422 cases (88.6 per cent) reported recovered. 

There are 1,456 active cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, including 128 people currently hospitalized with the virus. There are 31 patients in intensive care and 18 patients on ventilators due to COVID-19. 

Today's provincial report includes data from Jan. 15 to July 10 and includes the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population. Data included on resolved cases and last known confirmed is from each health unit's respective website. The breakdown for Northern Ontario health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health - 25 cases, rate of 21.8 per 100,000 population. There is one known active case.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 35 cases, rate of 27 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 37 cases, and 34 resolved cases and there has been one death. There are two known active cases
  • Porcupine Health Unit - 67, rate of 80.3 per 100,000 population. Of the confirmed cases, 59 are resolved and eight people have died. There are no known active cases. The last positive test was June 21.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 67 cases, rate of 33.7 per 100,000 population. All of the cases are resolved, and two people have died.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. The last positive tests were done April 28. All of the cases are resolved.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 93 cases, rate of 62 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 92 cases. There are 90 resolved cases and one person has died. There is one known active case.
  • Northwestern Health Unit - 42 cases, rate of 47.9  per 100,000 population. There are 38 resolved cases, and four known active cases.

The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 246.2.
