Theatre Cambrian coffeehouse provides auditory cheesecake

I have discovered a quaint little spot in the city where you can enjoy an evening of live entertainment by local performers for a meager admittance of $7.

Seems hard to believe, but it is true, and I am about to tell you about Sudbury’s best-kept secret.

Theatre Cambrian, located at the former St. Eugene Church at 40 Eyre St. in the West End, hosts a “Coffeehouse” on the first Tuesday evening of each month from 7-9 p.m., where music lovers like myself have the opportunity to enjoy live performances in an intimate, comfortable setting.

Last week, I attended my second coffeehouse and loved it so much I decided to tell you all about it.

The venue itself holds about 120 people and there is plenty of room to move about. Everyone has a good view of the stage, which is well lit and the sound is top notch.

For a donation, attendees are invited to help themselves to coffee, tea and a variety of delicious desserts. There is also a bar if one chooses to have a cocktail or two. It’s a nice evening out with friends and would be perfect for “date night.”

I enjoyed some coffee, fudge and cookies as the evening unfolded. Rod Bazinet, local musician and theatre volunteer, kept things moving as he introduced acts to the stage during the night. Because of the cozy size of the venue, those on stage are able to easily interact with their audience.

First up to the stage was the cast of Fame to sing a couple of songs. Fame is a full-scale musical production, entirely cast with youths from our community. Fame will run from Dec. 6-16.

Bryson Fuller then had us all shook up with his true-to-life rendition of Jailhouse Rock as Elvis. As he gyrated his hips across the stage and tore off his jacket, the crowd went nuts! His energy is contagious!

Chicks with Picks sang one of my favourite songs by the Eagles, Seven Bridges Road, and Naked Soul performed Me and Bobby McGee by Janis Joplin. It just so happens that The Eagles and Janis Joplin are included in my list of favourite musicians so it was a real treat for me to hear these songs.

Irmgard Hechler gave an astonishing vocal performance which compels one to pay attention. I wasn’t surprised to find out she offers professional vocal training at Theatre Cambrian!

Sulfur City is a band I like to see again and again. Jesse Lagace is an amazingly talented guitarist and Lori Paradis’ strong voice complimented his soft guitar playing exceptionally well.

I first came to know Theatre Cambrian when I volunteered to take pictures at their dress rehearsal for a dinner theatre production called It’s Just Sex in September. I enjoyed meeting everyone and helping out. I met Mark Mannisto, the executive director, who explained that Theatre Cambrian is mostly volunteer driven and has been providing quality community theatre since 1985.

I also spoke with Jeff Burton, the volunteer co-ordinator, who was directing It’s Just Sex. He spoke about all the work that was involved in getting the theatre ready for the public, something I can tell they are all very proud of.

Theatre Cambrian has something for everyone; young and old, and anyone can get involved. It is a fantastic way to meet new friends and have some fun.

By joining their Facebook group, Theatre Cambrian’s Official Page, I am now able to stay informed of upcoming events.

In the mood for some comedy? From Nov. 16-24, they are offering dinner theatre, where you can watch Self Help By Dummiez while enjoying a catered buffet meal by On The Rockz. Tickets are $50 and can be obtained by calling the box office at (705) 524-7317 ext. 0.

I have my ticket already for the Josh Macumber concert, which will take place on Dec. 12 and am excitedly looking forward to it. I watched some of his videos on Youtube and am sure it is going to be a night to remember.

Come join us!
