Sudbury MP-elect Viviane Lapointe celebrates her victory with her children, Erin and Connor Griffiths.

For the past few years, I’ve been working in the developmental services sector in Sudbury. It was an honour to work with such wonderful clients and families, a devoted team of professionals and a dedicated board of directors.

All of that changed with the 2021 election. So much has happened since l made the decision to pursue the dream of being Sudbury’s next Member of Parliament. A talented and dedicated campaign team formed around me. I knocked on thousands of doors and had hundreds of conversations with Sudburians on their doorsteps about what is important to this community. I listened, I heard you, and I am committed to being your voice in Ottawa.

The people of Sudbury want a better future. We want good jobs, quality health care, a prosperous economy and a healthy environment. We want our seniors to be well cared for, our young families to prosper and our vulnerable populations to be supported.

I’m proud of Sudbury. I respect our history. The people who built this city, and what lies beneath it, did so with grit and perseverance. We also applied entrepreneurship, creativity and initiative, which is reflected in our global mining supply and services sector, education and health hubs, and our approach to healing the environment.

I believe in Sudbury. As we now navigate our way out of the pandemic, a build-back-better approach is what Sudbury needs and deserves, and it’s my commitment to you to do all I can as your new MP, to help make that happen.

Sudbury has its challenges. It also has many opportunities. I believe that by working with you, we can make a difference in our community. My career has involved a great deal of relationship building, advocacy and outreach. I have worked with government and elected officials at municipal, provincial and federal levels and understand what it takes to secure community and government support.

I want to thank and congratulate all the candidates who ran in this election. Running for political office is a commitment like no other. It is all-consuming and completely takes over your life as well as the lives of your family and friends. I respect anyone who throws their hat in the political ring.

I also want to thank my predecessor MP Paul Lefebvre. Paul was a very successful MP, is deeply committed to our community, and remains highly respected both in Ottawa and in Sudbury. I will always be grateful to Paul for his service to Sudbury.

Last, and most importantly, I want to thank the people of Sudbury for putting their faith in me to be their voice in Ottawa. I view Sudbury as a community where people feel like they belong, where choices are respected, and inclusion is apparent. I want to help residents build a future that is economically and environmentally sustainable, welcoming of all people and voices.

I’m prepared for this moment of service. I’m ready to represent your interests in Ottawa in a Liberal government, and I am looking forward to the challenge.

Viviane Lapointe is the Liberal Member of Parliament-elect for Sudbury.
