Column: Police seek nominations for awards gala

The Greater Sudbury Police Service is pleased to announce the upcoming Community and Police Awards Gala - Our Shared Commitment.

The May 17 event will celebrate the amazing work of citizens and members of the police service who build community safety and well-being right here in Sudbury. The event will be held at the Caruso Club. As a major fundraiser for the police service, this gala will be celebrated as part of the annual Police Week activities.

The gala is an important and exciting opportunity to recognize the outstanding actions of members of the service, organizations and citizens in our community who have demonstrated a shared commitment consistent with the vision, mission and values of the police service. Through these partnerships, we take pride in making Sudbury a safe place to live, work and play.

A total of 10 distinguished award categories are available and nominations are now being accepted. Know someone you believe is deserving of nomination? Check the categories below for more info.

Sergeant Richard McDonald Memorial Award: This award is presented to a police service member in recognition of an enthusiastic and positive attitude that promotes a culture that significantly motivates members, fosters team spirit and supports our shared commitment to community safety and well-being.

Constable Joseph MacDonald Memorial Award: The Constable Joseph MacDonald Memorial Award is presented to a police service member who has demonstrated outstanding service to youth through official duty or through community involvement, or both.

Nicole Belair Service Above Self Award: This award is presented annually to a citizen who has distinguished themselves by an act of personal courage, community service or service above self.

Heroic Actions Award: This award is presented to a member of the service and/or a citizen for distinguished acts of heroism.

Meritorious Action Award: This award recognizes members for the exceptional performance of duty, community policing initiatives, or innovative initiatives that enhance the image or operation of the service.

Police Assistance Award: This award is presented to a citizen to recognize unselfish assistance rendered to aid another person.

Teamwork Commendation Award: This award is presented to a branch or a team of police service members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service that recognizes their exceptional collaboration on a project or event that had a positive impact on the image or the efficiency and effectiveness of the Service.

Police – Community Leader Award: This award is presented to a citizen in recognition of unselfish assistance provided to the service or for an initiative or innovation that has had a positive impact on the image or operation of the service.

Police – Community Partnership Award: This award is presented to community partners/organizations who work in partnership with the Greater Sudbury Police Service to recognize initiatives and/or innovations that had a positive impact on the image or operation of the service.

City of Greater Sudbury Partnership: This award is presented annually to an individual or department of the City of Greater Sudbury who has contributed in an extraordinary way to the police service.

Individuals who have assisted the service through acts of bravery or by other means, as well as organizations or service groups who have partnered with the service over the past year are eligible for such recognition.

To nominate a candidate, visit the Greater Sudbury Police Service website for online access to nomination information. Nominations should be submitted by April 11.
