On Thursday, May 18, 2017, the Greater Sudbury Police Service will host the third annual Community and Police Awards Gala – Our Shared Commitment  at the Caruso Club in Greater Sudbury.

This event honours Police Service members and showcases community partners and citizens who have demonstrated leadership in response to incidents that required their immediate intervention, as well as those partners and citizens who have supported initiatives dedicated to enhancing community safety and well-being.

The Community and Police Awards Gala – Our Shared Commitment is a great venue where we can all come together to recognize the individuals and organizations who have contributed to the overall safety and well-being of Greater Sudbury in 2016 and show our gratitude. We all must work together to make Greater Sudbury the best it can be.

As the Chief of Police and a citizen of Greater Sudbury, I take pride knowing that this service and community has so many dedicated members who demonstrate respect, inclusivity, courage and honesty as ambassadors for Our Shared Commitment to community safety and well-being.

Day-in and day-out, our officers respond head-on to dangerous situations. They selflessly put the lives of others ahead of their own in order to ensure the safety, security and wellness of our citizens. Our members, both civilian and sworn, go above and beyond their work-related duties, demonstrating exceptional performance and commitment to enhancing the well-being of Greater Sudbury.

It is no secret that, in our community, there are unsung heroes who aid citizens and assist first responders in times of crisis. Many times, these citizens are the ones who witness and call in the crisis, intervene on the victim’s behalf or are the first person at the location of the incident. These acts do not go unnoticed.

The Greater Sudbury Police work collaboratively with community partners to modernize our service delivery with an emphasis on effective and efficient risk-focused policing. Our goal is to identify, assess and address at-risk individuals, groups and situations in order to provide relevant services and support before an emergency response is required.

One of the strategic themes of the Greater Sudbury Police Service is to mobilize and engage our community. This is accomplished through various events, programs and initiatives led by our members in collaboration with our community partners. As the Service continues to evolve its proactive policing practices, we place significant emphasis on the importance of engaging and interacting with youth in order to build positive relationships. The youth of this community are the future of this community, and the positive interactions our members have with them today will nurture and grow the public trust in our police service for tomorrow.
The Greater Sudbury Police Service prides itself on enhancing the overall safety, security and wellness of this community and this begins with our support of our youth and youth programming. The Chief’s Youth Initiative Fund (CYIF) allows the Service to financially support various community events and initiatives through fundraisers such as the Community and Police Awards Gala – Our Shared Commitment. All of the proceeds raised from the gala will go towards the CYIF and will aid the Service in our continuous efforts to build a better future today.

Paul Pedersen is chief of Greater Sudbury Police Service.
