Become a certified food handler at the Sudbury & District Health Unit!

Do you work in the food service industry? Do you want to learn the safe way to prepare food or get your staff certified as a food handler?

If you work in a restaurant, a daycare, a long-term care facility, or if you just want to learn more about food safety, this one-day course is designed to meet your needs.
 

What topics are covered?

This one-day course meets the requirements for food safety training as set out by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

Topics covered include:

- introduction to food safety

- food safety legislation

- food poisoning

- micro-organisms

- time and temperature

- properly storing food

- contamination risks

- personal hygiene

- cleaning and sanitizing

- pest control

- food safety management


As an owner or operator why should my staff be certified food handlers?

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care recommends that all food premises designated as having a high or moderate risk rating, have at least 1 certified food handler present at the establishment during all hours of operation.

The course begins with a brief introduction to food safety and speaks to the legislation that covers food safety in Canada and in Ontario. Topics are relevant to your food premises and all staff working within.

Certification information

Individuals will be certified upon successful completion of the course and exam. A successful pass rate is 70% or 35 questions correct out of 50 overall questions.

The Certificate in Food Handler Training expires 5 years after the date of completion of the course and exam.

The Certificate in Food Handler Training is accepted and recognized by all health units across Ontario and meets the requirements listed by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.


Are there external providers from whom I can obtain food handler training and certification?

Yes, in addition to the food handler training program offered by the Sudbury & District Health Unit, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care recognizes other organizations that also offer food handler training and certification.

Please contact the Health Unit to become pre-approved to challenge the exam and to obtain further details. You must register first.
