It seems the drunk-driving case against a Greater Sudbury Police officer may be reaching a resolution by June 1.

Const. Thoman Van Drunen was charged with impaired driving Nov. 13 when he was pulled over by another police officer. He was off duty at the time.

The matter had been adjourned to May 26 for a tentative plea, but Van Drunen’s lawyer, Terry Waltenbury, said there is desire for an out-of-town judge to preside over the matter.

The matter will return June 1 at 9:30 a.m.

Van Drunen will still be subject to a disciplinary hearing under the Police Services Act, however. That hearing was postponed to allow the matter to make its way through the court system.

Van Drunen began with the Greater Sudbury Police Service in April 2020. Under the Police Service Act of Ontario, Van Drunen has been suspended from duty with pay.
