FAREWELL SUPERSTACK

Have your say in how the Superstack is commemorated! Vote now!

It is time to bid farewell to the iconic Sudbury superstack. Vale Base Metals is ready to complete the final phase of the $1 billion atmospheric emissions reduction (AER) project by dismantling of the copperstack and superstack.

In 2010, Vale unveiled a transformative $10 billion investment program to enhance and expand its Canadian operations and $1 billion was dedicated to modernizing Vale’s Sudbury Operations, culminating in the Clean AER Project. The dismantling of the copperstack and superstack will mark the final chapter of this ambitious initiative.

The Clean AER project has enabled Vale’s Sudbury Operations to eliminate 100,000 metric tonnes of sulfur dioxide emissions each year (equivalent to 1,000 railway tanker cars of sulphuric acid), bringing emissions down to 30% below the provincial standard. The superstack has been inactive since 2020, symbolizing significant progress toward cleaner air and a healthier environment.

Both chimneys will be carefully deconstructed over several years and will be done according to strict safety protocols. The copperstack will come down first and it is expected that this work will be completed by 2025. Planning and preparation are already underway to get the superstack ready for dismantling. This project is estimated to begin in late spring 2025 and last until 2028-29. More details and project updates can be found on https://vale.com/sudbury-superstack
