Derek Young is a community builder and is currently self-employed working in the events and entertainment industry.
Some of his notable clients include the President's Choice SuperDogs (longest running dog performance show in North America), Knights of Valour and the National Reading Campaign's Reading Town Ville Lecture Festival. Based on his entrepreneurial strengths and experience working in the arts, Young was recruited to the Theatre Cambrian board in October 2017.
He became president of the board in June and is leading the organization through significant change in its business operations. He is a founding member and past president of the Sudbury Indie Cinema Co-op, past president of the Sudbury Arts Council and was president of the Cambrian College Student Council in 2001.
He is a piper and has been involved in Sudbury's pipe band community for over 30 years and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
His platform is "Young, Responsible, Leadership" and focuses on recreation, retail, and residential development. Young is well-travelled, has vast working knowledge on a number of important municipal issues and will contribute thoughtful debate at council and will function at enterprise level.
His achievements have been recognized by the Young Professional's Association as the 2011 Young Male Professional of the Year, Queen's Jubilee Plaque of Honour from the Sudbury Multicultural Folks Arts Association in 2012, and he was a recipient of a Forty Under 40 Award in 2015.
He is very public in his support for the Kingsway Entertainment District, attending public meetings and input sessions, speaking positively about the vision and benefits of the project. He sees this new development as the best way to stabilize tax rates while promoting economic growth and development.
Throughout his work across Canada, he recognizes what is possible and has experience working in larger venues such as the Canadian National Exhibition, Western Fair District London, Evraz Place Regina and Prairieland Park in Saskatoon.
Young's contributions to Ward 11 include the inaugural Winterfest Carnival and Knights of Valour Jousting Tournaments held at Moonlight Beach. He was a member of the East End Park advisory committee and worked with the New Sudbury Days Festival.
He looks forward to carrying on the good work that has been done by Councillor Lynne Reynolds and with your support building on her legacy as the next councillor for Ward 11.
