I am a long-time resident as a home and business owned with my wife, Linda Cartier, in the Minnow Lake section of the Ward for over 25 years. Two of our six children and their partners live in the New Sudbury section of the ward.
I have been very much involved in the ward leading the efforts to create Minnow Lake Place from a former school to a valuable community resource. As head of the Restoration Group and Community Action Network, I facilitated efforts to develop walking trails, cycling routes, dog and skateboard parks, community gardens, millennial fountain etc. Also led successful efforts to keep Adamsdale Public School open for students in the area and advocated for safer streets in both sections of the ward, plus representing citizens dealing with local development issues before the city and OMB.
I have political experience as a former elected school board trustee and served as chair in my second term. I have served on a number of city citizen panels, besides being a member of a number of community organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, plus youth, seniors’ environmental and arts organizations.
I believe that from both a financial and environmental perspective, the Kingsway Entertainment District (KED) is not in the best interests of the city and Ward 11 in particular with concern due to traffic congestion that will result both on the Kingsway and on streets and roadways in the area. Also salt from the large parking areas will contribute further to Ramsey Lake pollution where sodium and chloride levels are dangerously high for both drinking water and aquatic life. The casino component is a “cash cow” for the province with little community benefit and if expanded gambling is to take place in the city, it should be at the site of the current slots in Chelmsford. The city should also lobby for the return of harness racing to Sudbury Downs to support a valuable local industry.
We need to protect our recreational facilities and green spaces. The Moonlight Beach area can be further enhanced as can the Adanac and Rotary trail areas. Public consultations need to take place to determine what improvements can take place in both sections of the Ward. I plan to have regular public meetings to determine issues of importance, concerns and suggestions for ward improvements.
I believe in fiscal responsibility and holding the line on tax increases while repairing and enhancing our infrastructure and present facilities, before spending on new projects with high price tags.
I intend to donate my yearly councillor pay to the Sudbury Community Foundation to be distributed to local charities.Further information at www.johnlindsay.ca or for those interested in meeting in person I will be at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch off Wellar Street in Minnow Lake every Thursday at 1.00 p.m. or give a call to discuss my candidacy at 707-507-6037 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
