Sudbury Indie Cinema kicks off its Women in Film Wednesdays series Oct. 18 with a screening of A Better Man.

One of the directors, Attiya Khan, will attend the event, which takes place starting at 7:30 p.m. at Sudbury Secondary School's Sheridan Auditorium.

The film was one of the hottest docs at Hot Docs last spring, said Beth Mairs, Indie Cinema's managing director and lead programmer, who was present for the World Premiere.

It has been credited as evolving the dialogue around gender-based violence.

Here's a synopsis: Twenty years ago, Toronto resident Khan was in a physically abusive relationship with her then-boyfriend, Steve. Today, she's a prominent feminist who has worked for women's shelters across the U.S. and Canada.

Khan has teamed with local filmmaker Lawrence Jackman to create a unique documentary that aims to evolve the conversation around domestic abuse.

Steve agrees to appear on camera to discuss the violence he inflicted on Khan and their troubled relationship.

Called "emotionally stunning," the screening of A Better Man will benefit both Genevra House and Take Back The Night Sudbury.

Advance tickets are $15 are available online on Event Brite. They cost $20 cash at the door.
