Jazz Sudbury Festival is officially launching its eighth annual festival Wednesday June 8, at Oscar’s Grill at 6:30 pm with an evening of live performances from this year’s Emerging Artists Showcase Finalists.
Jazz Sudbury’s eighth annual online talent search attracted contests from all parts of Ontario including Ottawa and Toronto, as well as some great representation from local Northern Ontario musicians and singers.
“Last year we received the highest number of high quality submissions we’d ever had in the showcase,” said Allan Walsh, Artistic Director of Jazz Sudbury.
“The showcase seems to be gaining some great traction, and while decisions become tougher, we continue to be more excited to present these incredible emerging artists.”
This year’s finalists include:
Toronto Duo Laura Swankey & Andrew Furlong team up to bring Sudbury a versatile and creative mix of jazz vocals and upright bass.
Vocalist Dominica Frometa, a Sudburian currently studying at Laurentian University, draws inspiration from her Latin Roots to share her powerful voice and radiant smile with her audience.
Ottawa based Feelin’ Nostalgic Sextet rounds out the competition with their original takes on everything from traditional to contemporary jazz. The group of six has roots across Canada from Calgary to right here in Sudbury.
Topping off the evening of musical delight is the highly anticipated lineup announcement for the Jazz Sudbury Festival in September.
They will reveal the headlining acts that will be featured on the stages of the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre in September, as well as the lineup of other exciting local and regional performers that will provide entertainment on stage and throughout downtown Sudbury venues.
Event tickets are $20 and are available online at Eventbrite.com. Visit www.facebook.com/jazzsudbury for more information and full artist bios.
