According to its guitarist and vocalist, Vancouver band Mother Mother is a “rock band with some eccentricities.”

“The lyrics are a little strange,” Ryan Guldemond said. “The fundamental bones is rock 'n' roll. It's rock 'n' roll with a bent, with a punch in the face, with a suplex.”

Mother Mother brings its unique sound to Sudbury on Saturday as it headlines the fifth annual Budweiser New Music Fest.

You better hope for good weather, though, as the concert takes place outdoors at the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre, starting at 6 p.m.

Joining Mother Mother is Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker (USS), a Toronto-based alternative dance musical duo. “Our counterparts, USS, are dear friends,” Guldemond said. “It's exciting to see them again and share the stage. It's always a blast.”

The event also includes performances by AA Wallace, Golden Gate Graves and Fortune Losers.

Guldemond grew up on Quadra Island off the eastern coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, a place with an atmosphere he describes as “a fusion of bohemian and blue-collar culture.”

He had to take the ferry to go to high school or go shopping in town.

In 2005, while studying music in post-secondary school in Vancouver, Guldemond formed the band that would eventually become Mother Mother.

He recruited his sister Molly, whom Guldemond said he thoroughly enjoys having in the band, along with several others.

Mother Mother's current incarnation includes the Guldemond siblings, Ali Siadat, Jeremy Page and Jasmin Parkin.

The band, which is currently playing frosh shows in Alberta and Ontario, has released five albums, and are working on their sixth, with a release date planned for 2017.

Guldemond said he's looking forward to playing in Sudbury, where he's had several gigs in the past, including at the Townehouse Tavern.

“You can expect five individuals to coalesce into a connected channel of clear intention, delivering music that they care deeply about,” he said.

Tickets to the event cost $29.95, and are available on the event's website
