The crown came with more than just bragging rights; Swankey and Furlong also took home a $1,000 cash prize and won the chance to play the main stage at the 2016 Jazz Sudbury Festival.

“We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to play,” said Andrew Furlong.

“It’s our first time in Sudbury, and we are very excited that we get to come back and play here again in the fall,” added Laura Swankey.

Laura Swankey and Andrew Furlong travelled up for the event from Toronto. Although both originally from Western Canada, they have become active members of the Toronto music scene.

Furlong is known for playing his upright and Fender electric bass in several different groups and Swankey is known for her vocal versatility, creativity and open-mindedness.

The runners-up, Feelin’ Nostalgic and Dominica Frometa, did not go home empty handed. They each received $500 for making it to the finals and putting on a great show.

The event saw many people come out to support these talented young artists and to enjoy a night of music and food.

The night also marked the official launch of the eighth annual Jazz Sudbury Festival. The festival will run from Sept 7 - 11 this year with local club performances preceding the main stage events on Friday and Saturday night.

The fourth annual Jazz Walk through the downtown core will occur on Saturday Sept. 10 as well as other events to be announced.

Tickets are on sale now through Eventbrite. There are different ticket packages available to suit your needs.
