Butterfly release supports Maison McCulloch Hospice

On Aug. 19, hundreds of new butterflies were released in Greater Sudbury as part of Maison McCulloch Hospice's annual fundraising event. The annual Desjardins Live Butterfly Release is an opportunity to remember loved ones by releasing a butterfly in their memory or honour, regardless of whether they have a connection to the hospice or not, said Yolanda Thibeault, executive director, Sudbury Hospice Foundation. The butterfly was chosen as it is symbolic of the beauty of nature, transformation and new beginnings, she said. “The Desjardins culture is to be part of the community, and the hospice allows our community who have loved ones here to live their final days in dignity,” said Jean Bisson, director, Caisse Populaire Vermillion. “We appreciate what they do, and the hospice's values match so well with our own.” The event has raised more about $100,000 over the past six years.

Hundreds of Ontario patients didn't receive full doses of cancer drug: agency

The agency that oversees cancer care in Ontario says a review found hundreds of patients did not receive full doses of cancer drugs because of issues with how the intravenous medications were administered. Cancer Care Ontario says that out of the nearly 1,000 people affected, less than ten needed to receive additional treatment as a result. But the agency says the matter is being taken seriously and guidelines for hospitals on how such drugs should be administered are being updated. The dosing issue first arose in June when the Mississauga Hospital west of Toronto notified Cancer Care Ontario of medication being left behind in intravenous tubes after patients received treatment. Cancer Care Ontario says it immediately asked all 74 Ontario hospitals that deliver cancer drug treatments to review their procedures to ensure medication was being administered properly.

After you, Mudmoiselle: Sudbury's dirtiest run yet returns

A day of mud, sweat and cheers in support of the Canadian Cancer Society, the Mudmoiselle obstacle course is a five-kilometre stretch of Canada’s muckiest, filthiest, slimiest mud. It drew dozens of people to Adanac Ski Hill on Saturday to raise money for cancer research. It’s where your inner child runs free while testing your endurance, strength and ability to keep a straight face. The event raises, on average, about $50,000 a year. This year's total has yet to be released.
