Good morning, Greater Sudbury. Here are a few stories to get you started on this Wednesday morning.
Woman, 33, faces murder charge following Melvin Street slaying
A 33-year-old woman is facing murder charges, Greater Sudbury Police said late Monday evening. In a news release, police said they responded to a call "to check on the well-being of the residents" at a Melvin Street Address. "Upon arrival officers located a deceased male within the residence," the release said. "Shortly thereafter, the other occupant of the residence, a 33-year-old female, was taken into custody for murder."
Man facing impaired charges after MR 80 crash leaves one person in critical condition
A 50-year-old man is facing impaired driving charges following a three-vehicle crash on MR 80 on Monday evening. The crash, which occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 and kept the roadway partially closed until 5 a.m. yesterday morning, happened between Cecile Street and Isabelle Street in Val Caron. When officers spoke with the 50-year-old driver of the vehicle that appeared to have started the chain of events leading to the crash, GSPS said the man was showing signs of impairment. Police said a breathalyzer indicated the man had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood. He was subsequently arrested and faces charges of operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs causing bodily harm, and driving with over 80mgs of alcohol in his bloodstream causing bodily harm.
Officers nearly hit as impaired driver sped through crash scene caused by another impaired driver
Greater Sudbury Police Chief Paul Pederson calls an overnight incident where an impaired driver sped her vehicle through the scene of a Val Caron crash caused by another impaired driver “beyond disappointing.” The three-vehicle crash, which occurred on MR 80 between Cecile and Isabelle streets at around 6:30 p.m. Monday evening, resulted in a 35-year-old man being ejected from his vehicle. He is now in hospital listed in critical condition. Police officers were investigating this crash on the closed roadway at around 12:25 a.m. Tuesday morning when a Honda Civic sped by the officer directing traffic and through the road barricades, into the active collision scene. According to Greater Sudbury Police, the vehicle continued down the road, narrowly missing multiple officers who were on foot conducting the investigation and running over collision reconstruction equipment before travelling towards a parked and occupied cruiser.
More than 3,000 CN workers hit the picket lines
More than 3,200 Canadian National Railway conductors, trainpersons and yard workers hit the picket lines early Tuesday. The workers' union — the Teamsters Canadian Rail Conference — and CN failed to ink a deal by the midnight deadline. The union gave CN a 72-hour strike notice over the weekend. Union spokesperson Christopher Monette is quoted in a Canadian Press article saying talks are continuing with the hope of ending the labour dispute as soon as possible. The union and the company have been in negotiations for seven months and have been working with federal mediators for the past five, said a press release from the Teamsters.

Cute alert! Sudbury tot sells lemonade, raises $1,750 for hospital
Hugo Mansourian may just be two years old, but he stopped by the Health Sciences North Foundation with a pretty big cheque last month. The tot raised $1,750 through his lemonade stand this past summer (well, we're sure he had some help from mom and dad). You may have been lucky enough to have enjoyed a delicious glass of peach vanilla or strawberry mint lemonade from Sudbury’s very own Hugo’s Lemonade Stand. Joseph and Elaina Mansourian encouraged Hugo to start his charity venture when he started showing an active interest in running a lemonade stand.
