Rally for Dad brings biker 'family' together
Fr. Jean-Paul Jolicoeur is not only parish priest at St. Jean de Brebeuf church, he's also a biker. And if those two images don't go together, then you have the wrong idea about bikers, Jolicoeur said Saturday before the kickoff of the Rally for Dad at the Northern Cancer Centre. "Bikers are a special group,” he said. “Sometimes, we have a tendency to judge bikers for different reasons. But every one of us has a heart and we care for those around us. That's why we dedicate so much time and so much effort to raise funds for prostate cancer. And with that, Jolicoeur led hundreds of bikers in a prayer before they headed out on their 215-kilometre annual trek to raise money to help fight prostate cancer. The Prostate Cancer Rally for Dad event was launched in 2001 raise awareness and funds for local prostate cancer research. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian men, affecting one in six. Since 2001, the Rally for Dad has raised more than $400,000 for local prostate cancer research, including $26,000 in 2017. Read the full story here.

Coniston Proud: Banners raised to celebrate all that makes the community unique
A project that began back in 2015 culminated with the installation of historical banners on June 15. Installed along Second Avenue (Coniston's main street), the colourful additions atop a number of poles feature historical photographs from Coniston’s past.  Jason Marcon said he pitched the idea to the Coniston Community Action Network (CCAN) three years ago while holding the position of CCAN's Chair. Marcon is a man who both knows and loves his roots: tracing his family to the area for over 100 years and having lived in Coniston all his life, he says he became obsessed with Coniston's history as a small child. "I think that it’s the greatest community to live in and I’m glad to be raising my family here as well," Marcon said. As a youth Marcon would read and collect every item he could get his hands on that referenced the community. As an adult, this pasttime would ultimately become useful by way of sharing some of the many historical photos he has amassed for use with the banner installation project. Read the full story here.
