Good morning, Greater Sudbury! Here are a few stories to start your weekend on this Monday morning.

Greater Sudbury’s unemployment rate up in January to 5.7%

Greater Sudbury’s unemployment rate rose slightly in January to 5.7 per cent from 5.4 per cent in December, said Statistics Canada in its monthly Labour Force Survey. Out of a potential workforce of 90,400 in Greater Sudbury, Statistics Canada reported 85,600 people are employed. Greater Sudbury’s participation rate was 64 per cent in January. In comparison, Greater Sudbury’s unemployment rate in January 2021 was 8.1 per cent. Read the full story here.

Greater Sudbury libraries, Citizen Service Centres return to more normal service Monday

The Greater Sudbury Public Library system will join Citizen Service Centres by again allowing in-branch services on Monday. These services include browsing collections, computer use limited to one-hour sessions, printing, scanning and photocopy services, municipal services, access to washrooms and a place to warm up. Residents who require Citizen Service Centre municipal services such as marriage licences and cemetery services are asked to phone in advance to make an appointment. The shift toward normalcy is part of a gradual reopening plan, with libraries having offered curbside and counter-side services since Jan. 10 in response to operational impacts on service levels. Photos: Slow Roll Convoy in Sudbury

A Slow Roll Convoy demonstration took place in Sudbury Saturday afternoon. Roughly 130 vehicles took part in the demonstration, slowly rolling down major Sudbury streets, horns honking, and vehicles decked out with flags and signs. Most of the vehicles taking part were personal vehicles, but we did count five transports and two dump trucks as of the beginning of the demonstration. Similar protests are also being held elsewhere in support of the convoy demonstrations in Ottawa. View our photo gallery.

Photos: Sudbury’s Ukrainian community shows support for homeland

About 75 members of Sudbury’s Ukrainian community and their supporters lined Paris Street Sunday afternoon to show their concern about the Russia-Ukraine standoff. Russia recently amassed more than 100,000 troops to Ukraine’s border, according to media reports. Troops are equipped with everything from tanks and artillery to ammunition and air power. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Canada, an umbrella organization for all Ukrainian organizations, issued a call earlier this week to rally in support of Ukraine. Local Conservatives disappointed to see O’Toole ousted as leader

With Erin O’Toole ousted as Conservative Party of Canada leader earlier this week, Greater Sudbury’s two Conservative candidates said they’re disappointed to see him gone. “I think that we were well-served by continuing with our current leadership,” last year’s Nickel Belt Conservative candidate Charles Humphrey said. O’Toole, he added, was always “willing to walk that very difficult path of principled compromise.” “There’s a strong temptation these days given the amped-up volume of our politics and the increasing divisiveness, there’s a very natural emotional temptation to respond to what you see as the threat of the other polarity that opposes you.” Read the full story.

GoFundMe pulls plug on fundraiser for Ottawa convoy protesters

Crowdfunding site GoFundMe will reimburse or redirect to charities the vast majority of the more than $10 million raised by demonstrators protesting COVID-19 measures in Ottawa, saying the event has become an occupation. The move could deny participants a vital source of money as Ottawa braces for a new wave of protesters slated to arrive in the national capital this weekend. GoFundMe said late Friday it supports peaceful protest and that it believes this was the initial intention of the Ottawa event. The crowdfunding site said it now has evidence from law enforcement that the demonstration "has become an occupation, with police reports of violence and other unlawful activity." GoFundMe said the fundraiser has been removed from its platform because it violates the site's terms of service, which prohibit the promotion of violence and harassment.
