Good morning, Nickel City! Here are a few stories to start your day on this Wednesday morning.

Gas prices at several Sudbury stations jump to 221.9

Gas prices at several stations in Greater Sudbury jumped about 14 cents per litre Tuesday, to 221.9. Most stations in Greater Sudbury were still charging 207.6 as of yesterday afternoon, so you can still get that price if you hurry. Some stations in the northern end of Greater Sudbury are charging under $2 per litre. The Circle K and Pioneer in Chelmsford are both charging 198.6.

Husband of woman guilty in $1M fraud goes on trial

While Michael Cady isn’t on trial for stealing more than $1 million from a local business, he allegedly knew where that money came from as he and his wife spent it on a lavish lifestyle, said the Crown’s office. Michael Cady pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges of laundering the proceeds of crime and possession of property obtained by crime after his wife, Karen Cady, stole more than $1 million from Henninger’s Diesel. Michael Cady is being represented by defence lawyer Glenn Sandberg. Karen Cady was sentenced to four years in prison in September last year after she pleaded guilty to possession of a fraudulent document used in the commission of an indictable offence and fraud over $5,000. This was Karen Cady's third fraud conviction in the past 15 years. She was further sentenced to one year concurrent to another offence relating to possession of a forged document. The Crown alleges that between Feb. 10, 2016 and May 21, 2020, a total of $306,677.29 in fraudulently obtained funds flowed into assets owned and registered to Michael Cady. Those funds were filtered through his Northern Credit Union account, said the Crown.

Popular Sturgeon Falls chip stand Larry's gutted by fire

On Saturday, May 14th, a fire broke out at Larry’s Chip Stand. Nobody was hurt, and no nearby buildings were affected, but the popular chip stand suffered severe damage. The fire department received the call at 9 p.m., fire chief Richard Maranda said, and the team was able to “hit it pretty quick.” There was a lot of smoke billowing from the Main Street building, and 18 firefighters arrived to extinguish the flames within. About half an hour later, the fire was out, but the crew remained to make sure all the hotspots were cold before they left. The structure is still intact, the Chief explained, but unfortunately, “there was extensive damage within the building.” The firefighters did a “tremendous job,” the Chief noted. “The fire was very intense when we got there.” The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by the Fire Marshall Office which will “pinpoint a source.” It did not take long for word to travel about the fire, and many people expressed their concerns for the owners via social media. Mayor Joanne Savage was not surprised by the community support, as Larry’s was a summertime institution. For many, summer isn’t summer without fries and a pogo.

Pursuit: Emily Marcolini finding success on two wheels

It’s not as though Emily Marcolini has never experienced sporting success. The 26-year-old graduate of St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School captured more SDSSAA track and field and cross-country championships than she has toes inserted into her fast-moving sneakers. While at Cambrian College, she won gold at the OCAA cross-country championships. She would make the move rather seamlessly into the world of high-end cycling, quickly making a name for herself on the national scene. Still, this most recent stretch of road races in California and New Mexico were different. “These are the first ever professional international world events that I’ve ever won,” said the team leader of the 3T/Q&M Cycling team, based out of Michigan. “This is at the top of my list.”

City clears final hurdle on supervised consumption site

The Community Drug Strategy for the City of Greater Sudbury is celebrating the announcement from Health Canada that they will grant a long-awaited a federal exemption to allow for operation of a supervised consumption site near downtown Sudbury. With a planned opening at the end of March delayed by construction woes and global supply chain issues, there was also the need to obtain federal exemption under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act to operate the facility. The approval of the exemption from Health Canada is the final element required to complete the provincial application for a funded supervised consumption and treatment site. The site will be located at Energy Court, just off Lorne Street. Réseau ACCESS Network is currently in the process of recruiting health-care professionals, namely nurses or primary care paramedics, to meet the minimum staffing requirements to open and begin offering services.

Autism advocates want a change in government on June 2

With the waitlist for the Ontario Autism Program roughly doubling to more than 52,000 children during the past four years of Progressive Conservative rule, local advocates are pushing back. Planted outside of the Sudbury home of the Ritchie/Staddon family is a sign that reads “Ford doubled the autism waitlist. #50KIsNotOK.” “If someone comes to your door and is canvassing, ask them questions,” said family matriarch Julia Ritchie, who alongside husband Sean Staddon is raising two children with autism; June, 7, and Charles, 5. Although the Ontario Autism Coalition behind the sign campaign is non-partisan in nature, the Ritchie/Staddon household also has a sign for Sudbury NDP candidate Jamie West on their front yard in hopes of assisting his campaign in the June 2 provincial election. West has been an ally these past few years, Ritchie said, adding that although she is willing to work with anyone who takes office, West has already been advocating on their behalf for years.
