Two killed in head-on collision Friday
On June 14 around 9:10 p.m., West Nipissing OPP, Sudbury OPP TIME team, Manitoulin-Sudbury District Paramedic Services, Greater Sudbury Fire Services and the Greater Sudbury Police Service, responded to a two-vehicle head-on collision on Hwy 17 in Greater Sudbury. The drivers of both vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. There were no passengers in either vehicle. West Nipissing OPP have identified the drivers as 50-year-old Kenton Gorman and 82-year-old William Howell, both from Elliot Lake. Read the full story here.
Heart-breaking anniversary: Three local teens killed by drunk driver on Father's Day 2009
It's a heart-breaking anniversary. Ten years ago, on Father's Day 2009 — which fell on June 21 that year — three local teens lost their lives thanks to the actions of an impaired driver. At around 12:40 a.m., Jazmine Houle, and her friend, Caitlin Jelley, both 15, got off a bus on the side of Highway 69 North in Hanmer. There they met up with Steven Philippe, 16, who had gone to the bus stop to escort the girls home. Shortly afterward, Nicolas Piovesan, who had been drinking at a Hanmer bar that evening, drove his car into the teens, who were walking along the side of the road, killing them. Man victim of online vigilantes after being confused with child porn suspect
Online vigilantes have been attacking a Greater Sudbury man whose only offence is having the same name as a child porn suspect. Richard Godin, 27, realized something was wrong Thursday not long after Greater Sudbury Police announced that another Richard Godin, 35, had been arrested and charged with child porn offences. At that point, some people began scouring social media looking for the suspect, and came across the innocent Richard Godin's Facebook and Linkedin profiles, and began publishing links and screenshots claiming he was the person arrested. Travel in Timmins restricted in response to nearby forest fire
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry have issued an order prohibiting access and travel in sections of the Timmins district, where fire activity from Timmins 2 is considered a threat to public safety. According to the latest fire situation update issued June 14 by Aviation, Fire and Emergency Services, Timmins 2 remains at 5622 hectares and is classified as 'not under control.' Judge overturns Manitoulin man's 2017 conviction for sex assault
Questions about how a rape kit was handled after a woman was sexually assaulted in April 2015 has convinced a Superior Court judge overturn a conviction in the case and order a new trial. The appeal was based on three factors: the delay in bringing the case to trial (which was dismissed) and the issue of whether the Crown proved the victim didn't consent to the sexual activity (also dismissed). But the third factor – how the rape kit was handled and presented as evidence – was enough to overturn the conviction, the judge ruled. Read the full story here.
Photos: Rally for Dad raises funds, awareness for prostate cancer
In a wave of thunder, nearly 150 riders kicked off a 200+ km run at the Northern Cancer Foundation (NCF) yesterday morning, to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer in the 18th annual Rally for Dad. Since 2001, Rally for Dad has raised more than $400,000 for the NCF, it's beneficiary since choosing to host an annual fundraiser independent of the national Ride for Dad movement. This fundraising has supported numerous efforts in the fight against cancer over the years, everything from the work of researchers like Dr. Mike Conlon, to the purchasing of equipment for the radiation suit at the Northeast Cancer Centre or at Health Sciences North. Sudbury Rockhounds shine in Stayner
Local rep lacrosse teams have not grown accustomed to collecting the hardware, in recent years, participating in tournaments south of Barrie, but that may be starting to change. All three of the Sudbury Rockhounds' delegations that attended the 2019 Stayner Hitmen Spring Showdown finished in the top three in their respective divisions, led by the Sudbury Peewee Rockhounds, who were golden in the event that targetted the "D/E" grouping of teams in central Ontario. A duo of local duets shine in Synchro Championships
The results, right across the board, were exciting, but it was the duets that were absolute dynamite as Sudbury Synchro attended the 2019 Ontario Championships in Nepean earlier this month. The local pairings were paced by the tandem of Stacie Kohan and Georgia Speck (coached by Courtney Stasiuk), garnering silver in the junior free duet, and bronze in the junior tech duet. In fact, Sudbury competitors nabbed two of the two four placements in the junior free duet routines, with Emily Binks and Sarah Ieropoli (coached by Candice Larochelle) just two spots back of Kohan and Speck in the ten team event.
