Sudbury long-term care home declares COVID-19 outbreak
St. Joseph’s Villa long-term care home in Sudbury confirmed an outbreak of COVID-19 on Sunday, following the diagnosis of one staff member. Earlier in the day PHSD confirmed the 42nd case of COVID-19 in the area to date, whether this includes the St. Joseph's Villa staff member has yet to be determined. Of these reports a total of 33 individuals have recovered from the virus to date and one has died as a result. As of 12:15 p.m. on April 19, there have been 2,294 tests conducted by PHSD. RCMP officer among the more than 10 killed in Nova Scotia rampage
RCMP say more than 10 people are dead after a police chase and shootings in rural Nova Scotia. They say Const. Heidi Stevenson, a 23-year member of the force and mother of two, is among the dead. Police say the suspected shooter, 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman, is also dead and the Serious Incident Response Team has been engaged. Read the full story here.

Reconvening parliament in its traditional sense Monday would be “irresponsible” says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, placing blame on the Conservative Party for the delay. The schedule as it stands he said, would mean the attendance of 338 members of parliament from around the country in Ottawa on April 20, as well as their staff, clerks, interpreters, security guards, and cleaners. WATCH: Ontario invests $20 million in COVID-19 research
Premier Doug Ford has announced $20 million in funding for Ontario researchers trying to find a vaccine for COVID-19, as cases of the virus climbed passed the 10,000 mark in the province on Saturday. Ford said Ontario researchers have already made strides in vaccine research by isolating the virus and acquiring blood and plasma samples of people who have beat COVID-19, which are two initial steps in development. WATCH: Canada-United States border to be closed for another 30 days
Canada has extended its border closure with the United States for 30 days. The closure restricts non-essential travel across the border. Trudeau also announced Saturday the government is providing $306 million to help Indigenous companies. Read the full story here.

COVID-19 leads to shortage of salbutamol inhalers: Health Canada
Increased demand for salbutamol inhalers due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a reported shortage and limited supply said Health Canada. Steps are being taken to mitigate the impact of the shortages and is providing advice to Canadians on how to conserve supply. At this time, most patients will receive only one inhaler at a time when they go to refill their prescriptions. Read the full story here.
Video: Sudbury trucker convoy salutes frontline health-care workers
Saturday afternoon at around 3 p.m. a convoy of dozens of big rigs rolled passed Health Sciences North in a trucker tribute to the efforts of health-care workers on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic. Organized by Sudbury transport driver Jason Death, the convoy rolled from the parking lot on York Street, across from Bell Park, along Paris Street and around Health Sciences North. Love reaches new heights at Elizabeth Centre
A senior couple separated as a result of COVID-19 were able to have a face-to-face meeting of sorts Thursday with help from an anonymous business and their heavy machinery crane. The husband told his wife he felt like a modern-day Romeo and Juliet, he later told the staff amid tears of joy, who were there for the meeting to cheer the romantic couple on. Mix of sun and cloud Monday and a high of 7 C. South 30 km/h wind gusting to 60 km/h in the morning, to introduce a wind chill of -16 C but not affect the temperature much after that. Snow mixed with rain expected to begin in the evening, accumulating to around 5 cm of snowfall. Southwest 30 km/h wind gusting to 50 km/h will shift to northwest 20 km/h gusting to 40 km/h overnight, before becoming light near midnight. Overnight temperature to reach a low of -2 C.
