Outbreak declared after Pioneer Manor resident tests positive for COVID-19
The City of Greater Sudbury has confirmed a resident of Pioneer Manor has tested positive for COVID-19, prompting the declaration of an outbreak at the long-term care home. Ministry of Health direction requires a COVID-19 outbreak be declared with a single laboratory-confirmed case in a resident or staff member. Read the full story here.
COVID-19 recoveries outnumber new cases in latest provincial report
There were more resolutions than COVID-19 cases reported by Ontario Public Health Units as of Saturday, along with a record number of 12,020 more tests conducted across the province. Three of these cases were reported in Northern Ontario, along with eight recoveries by the Porcupine Health Unit. One case was found in the Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls area, one in the Thunder Bay district, and another in the area of Sault Ste. Marie. Read the full story here.
Crews respond to bush fire 300 ft from Val Caron residence
Greater Sudbury Fire Services responded to a bush fire behind a Maple Street home in Val Caron on Sunday, following reports of smoke from a resident in the area. Crews were on-scene less than ten minutes after the call was received Sunday at 4:07 p.m. and had the fire under control by 4:40 p.m. that afternoon. There was no damage to buildings in the surrounding area and no one was harmed. Read the full story here.
Ontario school closure extended to May 31
Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce has announced that publicly-funded schools in the province will remain closed until at least the end of May over COVID-19 concerns. He also added that remaining PA days for the year would be cancelled to free more time for student learning, and that the province would expand its summer learning program, which provides opportunities for credit recovery and learning enhancement. Ford announces temporary pay boost for frontline workers
Hundreds of thousands of Ontario frontline workers will receive a temporary pay boost from the Ontario government. The supplement is expected to cover over 350,000 eligible frontline workers in health, social services, and corrections. Read the full story here.

Milman Industries donates over 2,000 pieces of PPE to frontline workers
Milman Industries Inc. in partnership with the Mansour family will be donating 2,350 pieces of personal protective equipment to support frontline workers in their fight against COVID-19. This donation of critical equipment has been allocated to the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS), Health Sciences North (HSN), Greater Sudbury Fire Service (GSFS) and Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services. Vale confirms crown blast to be responsible for 3.0 MN seismic event
Vale has confirmed that last night’s rumble was, in fact, a result of a crown blast. The 3.0 MN seismic event occurred at 9:45 p.m. on the 5200 level at Garson’s Mine. All employees working that evening were safely brought to the surface and all day shifts have been cancelled while underground assessments are being conducted. Read the full story here.
Ontario parks to remain closed until May 31
This will put a big dent in the May 2-4 weekend. Jeff Yurek, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks today said, "In order to keep Ontarians safe during this COVID-19 outbreak, our government is extending the closure of Ontario's provincial parks and conservation reserves to May 31.
