Well over half of COVID-19 cases have recovered provincewide

More than 68 per cent of COVID-19 cases in Ontario and 79 per cent of those in Northern Ontario have reportedly recovered from the virus, the latest provincial update states. The most recent cases in the region were reported by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU), after one employee of a local long-term care facility, a resident of a neighbouring First Nation community, and an elderly woman who has since been hospitalized, tested positive for the virus. More medication recalled for the presence of a probable human carcinogen

The Pendopharm Division of Pharmascience Inc. is recalling two lots of Axid (nizatidine) from the Canadian market, for containing the maximum acceptable limit of a nitrosamine impurity and probable human carcinogen, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). Axid is a prescription drug that is used to treat ulcers in the stomach and intestine as well as heartburn. A carcinogen, on the other hand, is any substance capable of causing cancer. Trudeau announces $175M investment in ‘promising’ COVID-19 research

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced another round of sizable federal investments on Sunday, targeted in particular to parents, mental and physical health resources, and COVID-19 research. With a total bill of over $415 million dollars, this funding will not only finance what he described as “promising” solutions to the virus but support families as they wait for life to return to normal, as stated in his latest public address at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa. Critical care chief: We planned for the worst, fortunately we’re not seeing it

The chief of critical care at Health Sciences North says he knows how frightening it can be for COVID-19 patients and their families to see gowned and masked hospital staff tending to them. But as difficult as the past few weeks have been (and the upcoming weeks and months will be), the fact that Canada, and by extension Ontario and Northern Ontario appear to have escaped the worst of the pandemic means the sacrifices were worth it. Ford takes aim at Trudeau government's gun control measures

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is taking aim at the federal government's new gun control measures, saying he believes the feds should focus on smuggling of illegal weapons at the border and strengthening jail sentences for gun crimes rather than targeting legal gun owners. On Friday, the Trudeau government outlawed a wide range of assault-style rifles, saying the guns were designed for the battlefield, not for hunting or sport shooting. Read the full story here

Don’t keep those donations bottled up, help support the food bank, says local couple

With nothing but time on their hands in the midst of a pandemic, a local couple is doing what they can to help the Sudbury Food Bank feed the numerous people using its services. Curtis Loiselle and Ashlie Wainman have spearheaded a fundraising campaign called We The Bury, a bottle drive to raise money for the food bank. Read the full story here

Greater Sudbury man steals cigarettes, arrested in parking lot

A resident of Greater Sudbury has been arrested and taken into custody, following the robbery of a convenience store on Notre Dame Avenue earlier that day. Around 11:01 a.m. on Sunday, Greater Sudbury Police received a report that a man had presented a firearm to a store clerk, demanding cigarettes. Read the full story here

OPP search for suspects who forcibly broke into Killarney Provincial Park

Police are in the process of investigating another incident of mischief at Killarney Provincial Park, after a gate to access the property had its hardware removed before being taken down. Officers of the Nipissing West (Sudbury) Ontario Provincial Police received notice of the mischief sometime in the afternoon of April 27 and upon further investigation, determined the crime had taken place between 9 a.m. on April 26 and 5:15 p.m. on April 27. Impaired driver refuses to stop, earns additional charges from OPP

A resident of the Central Manitoulin Township was arrested and charged on April 30, after being spotted by police en route to a call placed for their behaviour. On April 30 at 7:10 p.m. a call was made to the Ontario Provincial Police Manitoulin Detachment for service to a residence in the township. Read the full story here
