OSSTF strike Feb. 28 impacts 3 Sudbury school boards
A rotating strike by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) will hit the Rainbow District School Board and the local French public and French Catholic boards Friday, Feb. 28. As of Friday afternoon, statements about Feb. 28 school closures had not yet been issued by the Rainbow board or the two local French boards, Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario and Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l'Ontario. Coldest Night of the Year raises over $69,000 for Samaritan Centre
Greater Sudbury was one of 140 communities across Canada to host the Coldest Night of the Year 2K, 5K Walk-A-Thon in support of those less fortunate Saturday (Feb. 22), raising more than $69,000 for the Samaritan Centre. Saskatoon protest springs up, even after Trudeau orders blockades torn down
More protests in solidarity with Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs sprung up on Saturday, a day after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pivoted to take a sterner tone with Indigenous leaders he blames for halting train service across much of Canada. Crowds of protesters rallied at the Ontario legislature in Toronto, carrying signs that called for RCMP to leave Wet'suwet'en land and for the federal government to respect Indigenous sovereignty. Recruits discover the value of a helping hand at 6th annual Volunteer Fair
When you give - you expect to get - it's only fair. But it's what you get from volunteering in Greater Sudbury that makes the experience so invaluable. On Saturday (Feb. 22) Volunteer Sudbury/ Bénévolat Sudbury hosted its 6th annual Volunteer Fair at the New Sudbury Centre, where they featured 16 local organizations and businesses actively searching for volunteers in varying capacities. Science North awarded 100K to determine feasibility of a Northwestern science center
Efforts to bring a permanent science centre to Northwestern Ontario got a boost Friday, as Minister Patty Hajdu announced $100,000 in FedNor funds for a Science North feasibility study on the project. Hajdu announced an additional $100,000 for the organization to conduct climate change education across Northern Ontario. Read the full story here.

Helping others navigate through stressful life events was the motivation for Gary Petingola to write “The Response: Practicing Mindfulness in Your Daily Life.” In his debut book, which launched Feb. 22, he shares insights, stories and easy to follow mindfulness exercises gathered throughout his career as a medical social worker. Northern MMA community raises $1,310 for YMCA Strong Kids Campaign
The Northern Ontario mixed martial arts (MMA) community met on the mats Feb. 15, raising $1,310 for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign at the inaugural Northern Ontario Kickboxing Spar-A-Thon hosted by Sudbury MMA. Around 10 youth and 40 adults from gyms across North Bay and Greater Sudbury participated in the event, with skill levels ranging from recreational to that of a professional fighter, said Sonia Paquette, Sudbury MMA instructor. Wolves shutout league-leading Ottawa 67's
Since losing on the road to the league-leading Ottawa 67's Nov. 21, the Sudbury Wolves have been waiting for their opportunity to settle the score and boy, is victory sweet.
That long-awaited victory came Sunday (Feb. 23), with a 2-0 shutout at Sudbury Arena, secured with just under two minutes remaining in play. Marking the last of the team's matchups this regular season. Read the full game report here.
Spirit take their revenge against the Sudbury Wolves
Five months after defeating the Saginaw Spirit at their hometown Michigan Dow Event Centre, the Sudbury Wolves have fallen to the same fate. The Pack lost 10-6 at Sudbury Arena on Friday (Feb. 21) at the hands of their Western Conference rivals, just a few short days after falling from their winning streak at the hands of the Peterborough Petes. McCarville and Sudbury connection fall in Scotties playoff showdown
The positive was a playoff appearance, yet again, for the Northern Ontario rink of Krista McCarville, Ashley Sippala and Sudburians Kendra Lilly and Jenny Gates. Who represented the Northern Ontario Curling Association (NOCA) with pride at the 2020 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan this week. The disappointment would come courtesy of falling short of the ultimate prize, beaten 9-5 by Rachel Homan and her Ontario rink in a game that was neck and neck through nine ends of play.
