Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Some Sudburians still without power after Friday wind storm

High winds of 70 to 100 km/h that blew in Greater Sudbury and across the province Friday caused some damage and left many people without power. Greater Sudbury Hydro had restored power to the vast majority of its customers by Saturday afternoon, but as of late Sunday afternoon, Hydro One said 2,086 customers in the Sudbury area were still without power. The estimated time of power restoration for those customers is 6 p.m. Monday. Check out more on this story, as well as a photo gallery of wind damage pictures from our readers.

Arm wrestling: Yup, it's a real sport, and the Northern Ontario championships took place in Sudbury on Saturday

Overtime Sports Bar and Grill was filled with muscular, sweating, grunting men (and a few ladies too) Saturday.
That's because the bar hosted the Northern Ontario Armwrestling Championships, put on by the Arm Melter Armwrestling League, in conjunction with Sudbury's own Team Arm Machine.
More than 100 people took part in the tournament, which featured amateur and open categories, as well as a main event super-match between Jeff Dabe of Stacy, Minnesota and Sudbury's own Brian Desormeaux.
Dabe is the current North American Professional Championship belt holder, while Desormeaux is the four-time Ontario champion.
In the end, Dabe, who's described in one online article as a real-life Popeye with 19-inch arms and huge hands, prevailed 3-2 in the super-match.

Sudbury police officer could be fired over comments made on social media

A 17-year veteran of the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) faces dismissal or demotion over an allegation of misconduct after posting critical comments about his peers on social media earlier this year.
First Class Const. Robert Rheaume, 50, made a brief appearance before a hearing committee adjudicated by Ontario Provincial Police Superintendent Greg Walton on Sept. 21. He is charged with one count of discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act for breaching the provisions of the GSPS corporate communications and social media policy, as well as the workplace discrimination and harassment policy.

Former Sudbury Wolves head coach Dave Matsos collapses on bench

Former Sudbury Wolves head coach Dave Matsos — who has a new job as head coach with the Hamilton Bulldogs — had a bit of a health scare Saturday night.
He was taken to hospital for precautionary measures after he collapsed on the bench in the final seconds of Saturday night’s game in Barrie.
According to a Global News report, Matsos, 44, was attended to by on-site paramedics and was alert and responsive when he was taken out of the Barrie Molson Centre on a stretcher.
There's still no word on what caused him to collapse.

Power outage causes water to gush out of Lively water tower

If you happened to notice that the McGill Street water tower in the Lively area was gushing water Saturday, it was as a result of the power outage, and it has been dealt with.
Eve Garber posted a video of the strange sight on the Facebook community message board “Ward 2 Community Board” Saturday, writing “Don't think this is supposed to happen.”
Check that video out here.
Ward 2 Coun. Michael Vagnini later thanked community members for bringing the issue to his attention, saying he called it into the city.
“When water drops below a certain level, a valve opens from McGill Street and fills the tower,” he wrote. “Because the power was out, the sensor did not tell the valve to close. Hence the overflow, but it has been addressed.”

Firefighters pull woman from her smoke-filled Second Ave. apartment

Greater Sudbury Fire Services pulled a woman from her smoke-filled Second Avenue apartment Sunday morning.
Firefighters responded to the call of an alarm ringing at the two-storey apartment building at 9:40 a.m.
“During the primary search, a woman was pulled from her bedroom by firefighters,” said an email sent to media by Platoon Chief Andre Groulx.
“She was treated by fire personnel for smoke inhalation until paramedics arrived on scene. She was transported by ambulance to HSN. An electrical malfunction of a appliance is the probable cause of the fire. Damage was minimal.”
Only one unit was impacted by the fire, with losses estimated at just $2,000.

Info session on kids and concussions takes place Sept. 26

Rowan’s Law Day, the last Wednesday in September, honours Rowan Stringer, a 17-year-old rugby player who died as a result of multiple concussions.
In 2017, Ontario passed concussion safety legislation, known as Rowan’s Law, that establishes mandatory requirements for organizations and coaches, with an aim to make sport safer on the field, court, mats, or playground.
In honour of Ronan's Law Day, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine hosts an public information session about concussions called Kids and Concussion: What You Need to Know at the Sudbury Arena from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 26.

Council race: Kirwan says he's seeking re-election to ensure 'transformational' projects are completed

Ward 5 incumbent Robert Kirwan — a champion of the Kingsway Entertainment District Project (KED) — said as a lifelong resident of the city, he can remember opposition to various projects, just like people are now opposing the KED.
That includes landmarks such as Science North, the Bell Park boardwalk, the Howard Armstrong Recreation Centre and the big box development on The Kingsway.
“I often find myself wondering why it is always so difficult for some people to get behind the development of such progressive projects that clearly have the potential to change the face of our city,” Kirwan said.
He said he wants to be re-elected as Ward 5 councillor to make sure “transformational projects” such as the KED and the arts centre planned for the current Sudbury Arena location are completed.
“I think about how citizens like Dario Zulich need my support so that they know the cause they are fighting for is worth the pain and aggravation,” he said.
“And I know that life will be better for all residents of the City of Greater Sudbury because I am one of those councillors who refused to give up. I want my grandchildren to be proud of their grandfather.”
