NDP leader Jagmeet Singh visits Sudbury Sept. 17

Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada since 2017 and candidate in the 2019 federal election, will be hosting a town hall in Sudbury Sept. 17. The meeting will take place at the Sudbury Steelworkers hall from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. This will be an opportunity for Singh to communicate his campaign platform and how his party plans to make life more affordable for Canadians. 

Food Recall: Calcilo XD Powder infant formula

Abbott Laboratories is recalling Abbott brand Calcilo XD powder from the marketplace due to rancidity and being off-colour. Food that is rancid, has an unusual odour or smells 'off' should not be consumed. Consumption of rancid food may cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. NDP's Stef Paquette fires up supporters at Val Caron office launch

Nickel Belt NDP candidate Stef Paquette came out swinging Saturday, opening his campaign office in Val Caron with a fiery speech that hinted at some of the scandals that has dented the popularity of Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his party since they came to power in 2015. "I'm done watching," Paquette told a crowd of friends, family and neighbours, as well as Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas and Kent MacNeill, president of the NDP Nickel Belt Riding Association. "I'm also done with the hypocrisy, the lies, the empty promises, the scandals and the lack of accountability." Read the full story here

Liberty and love: Tuesday Cinéfest gala film about back-to-the-land Northern Quebec hermits

Montréal filmmaker Louise Archambault's film “Il pleuvait des oiseaux” is set very close to Northern Ontario — in Abitibi, Que. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month, but after that, it's coming to Northern Ontario. It's the Tuesday, Sept. 17 gala film at Cinéfest International Film Festival. Read the full story here

Mexican fast-casual restaurant expands to Sudbury

Craig Burgess, co-founder and operator of Sault Ste. Marie-based restaurant Wacky Wings, will open five new Mexican chain restaurants across Northern Ontario in the next few years. Mexican fast-casual chain QDOBA Mexican Eats recently announced a new agreement with Burgess Enterprise in an Aug. 19 press release. Burgess Enterprise is expected to open multiple QDOBA locations in Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Timmins, North Bay, and Thunder Bay. The first restaurant will open in Sault Ste. Marie in early 2020. Superheroes for Little Heroes return to Health Sciences North Oct. 20

It's a bird, it's a plane - it's members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service Tactical Unit returning for the annual Superheroes for Little Heroes fundraiser in support of the NEO Kids Foundation. On Oct. 20 at 11 a.m., officers will be rappelling down the south and centre tower of Health Sciences North dressed as superheroes to surprise patients in the pediatric unit and newborn intensive care unit, before greeting the little heroes waiting below. LU Voyageurs recruit promising young rower

It's the start of a new school year and, truth be told, there's a whole lot of new in the life of Laurentian Voyageurs' rowing coach Amanda Schweinbenz as well. Sure, some of the newness is traditional, as is the case with the influx of freshman talent to her team, a varsity grouping that more than doubled in size, with five new females added to the roster, including Team Ontario U19 member Abbey Maillet.
