Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your weekend.

Some councillors not happy Place des Arts seeking more in operating funds:

While approving a business case to be voted on during the 2019 budget, some members of city council aren't impressed the Place des Arts is already asking the city to increase the amount it will give each year in operating money. Building of the $30 million arts centre is expected to begin soon, with construction funds in place, including $5 million from the city spread out over three years.  The city is also donating the downtown land where the arts centre will be built, and Place des Arts is asking they not pay property tax. Initially, they asked for $200,000 in an annual operating grant, but this week, councillors learned the ask had grown to $260,000 a year after a review of their “operational needs.” More on this story can be found here.

Mud, sweat and cheers: Mudmoiselle cancer fundraiser is Aug. 18:

Get ready for a day of mud, sweat and cheers in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. The Mudmoiselle obstacle course is a five kilometre stretch of Canada’s muckiest, filthiest, slimiest mud.  It’s where your inner child runs free while testing your endurance, strength and ability to keep a straight face. The Sudbury Mudmoiselle race takes place Saturday, Aug. 18 at Adanac Ski Hill. Teams of four or more are encouraged. The minimum age to participate in the event is 13. Those participating between the ages of 13-16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian on the course.

Butterfly release to benefit hospice this Sunday:

On Aug. 19, hundreds of new butterflies will be released in Greater Sudbury as part of Maison McCulloch Hospice's annual fundraising event. The 2018 Desjardins Live Butterfly Release is an opportunity to remember loved ones by releasing a butterfly in their memory or honour, regardless of whether they have a connection to the hospice or not, said Yolanda Thibeault, executive director, Sudbury Hospice Foundation. The butterfly was chosen as it is symbolic of the beauty of nature, transformation and new beginnings, she said. “The Desjardins culture is to be part of the community, and the hospice allows our community who have loved ones here to live their final days in dignity,” said Jean Bisson, director, Caisse Populaire Vermillion. “We appreciate what they do, and the hospice's values match so well with our own.” The event has raised more about $100,000 over the past six years.

Sudbury couple angry, shocked after thieves steal both their vehicles in one night:

A Sudbury couple is feeling heartbroken after their two vehicles were stolen from in front of their homes earlier this week. Cyndle Chartrand and Kyle Stutt are scrambling right now to replace both the 2017 Hyundai Tuscon and 2017 RAM 1500 that were stolen sometime over night between Aug. 14-15. The vehicles were parked in front of their home on Burton Avenue, and the doors were locked, said Noella. Chartrand's Hyundai was purchased in October 2017 and Stutt's truck was purchased in February this year. Find the full story here.

Vehicle thefts in the Nickel City: The numbers might surprise you:

Sudbury has one of the lowest crime rates of any large Canadian city and the numbers show it to be one of the safest cities in both Northern Ontario and the entire country. But that doesn't mean crime doesn't happen in the Nickel City. It does. And that came into sharper focus this week after Sudbury.com asked Greater Sudbury Police Service for information related to recent vehicle thefts. The stats GSPS provided might surprise you. Greater Sudbury Police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn told us that in a six-week span — from July 2 to Aug. 12 — there have been 224 thefts from vehicles and 46 stolen vehicles reported. In approximately 31 of the stolen vehicle occurrences (67 per cent), keys were either left inside the vehicle or were used by the person to steal the vehicle. In 199 of the thefts from vehicles (89 per cent), the vehicle was either left unsecured or unlocked, showed no signs of forced entry, or involved the theft of a license plate. Check out where the most common areas in the city are for vehicles to be stolen here.

High temps, little rain: Sudbury being asked to cut water usage by 10%

Conservation Sudbury has confirmed a Level I - Low Water Condition for all parts of Greater Sudbury watersheds effective as of 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17. This condition will remain in effect until another update is provided or the condition changes. Since February of this year, the watersheds in and around the City of Greater Sudbury (CGS) have received significantly lower precipitation compared to the long-term average. This has resulted in reduced flows in most watercourses, the Conservation Sudbury reported Friday. The water level in all streams has dropped significantly. Extended periods of high daytime temperatures — coupled with lower than average precipitation — have increased evaporation, resulting in dry conditions throughout the watershed. The short-term Environment Canada forecast shows continued warm temperatures during the day with no significant precipitation in sight.

Take a left on Meagan Duhamel Drive:

If you're looking for Turner Drive in Lively you may end up stopping to ask for directions as the street has officially been renamed. Thankfully, if Friday's official celebration of the street's renaming is any indication, community members will be more than familiar with the newly named Meagan Duhamel Drive. A number of friends and community members turned up at the corner of Anderson Drive and Meagan Duhamel Drive on Aug. 17, as Ward 2 coun. Michael Vagnini and mayor Brian Bigger congratulated the Olympian on having the street she grew up on renamed in her honour. "Meagan is one of Sudbury's most decorated athletes, we have a star here and an individual that has done so much for this community and to be able to do this today is a great pleasure and honour," said Vagnini. The street sign is posted at the corner of Anderson Drive and the former Turner Drive, just steps up the road from the T.M. Davies Community Centre and Arena where Duhamel honed her craft as one of the country's best pairs figure skaters.
