Sudbury, Manitoulin considered COVID-free
The last active case of COVID-19 in the Sudbury, Manitoulin area has recovered, making Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) one of three units in Northeastern Ontario with a clean bill of health. Elsewhere in the province, an additional 138 new cases of COVID-19 were reported since Saturday, along with 183 recoveries, and two deaths, bringing the total number of active cases to 1,839. Seventeen fires found in Sudbury since Friday, thirteen remain active
Six new forest fires were found in the Sudbury region since the last fire situation update by Sudbury.com, one of which has already been extinguished. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry also found three more fires in the surrounding area during that time, in North Bay and Chapleau. There are now thirteen active fires in the Sudbury region, including seven reported Saturday, and one reported earlier in the week. Read the full story here.
Heat warning extended for Sudbury, Manitoulin, and surrounding area
The heat warning originally issued by Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) June 30, has been extended in response to the hot, humid weather forecast for the coming week. It will remain in effect so long as temperatures remain 29 C or above during the day, and 18 C or above at night, or the humidex reaches 36 C or above. Read the full story here.
American couple charged for not self-quarantining after entering Canada
A pair of Excelsior, Minnesota residents have been fined $1,000 apiece for not complying with mandatory self-quarantine rules after crossing into Canada. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) on Saturday said the pair were instructed by Canada Border Service Agency workers to proceed directly to their destination and remain there for 14 days, after arriving at a crossing in Fort Frances, Ont. on June 24. GSPS release suspect in attempted murder case, arrest another
Greater Sudbury Police have released a 25-year-old man arrested for attempted murder Friday, finding that although he had been in an altercation with the victim, he was not responsible for their most critical injuries. In the early hours of July 1, police were called to a disturbance involving two individuals at a residence on Ferndale Avenue in the Minnow Lake area. Through further investigation officers determined that a serious assault had taken place between the individuals, found to be known to each other, and the arrest of a 25-year-old suspect was performed. Man charged after bringing a rifle on Sudbury transit
A man was charged Friday after bringing a gun onto Sudbury Transit. On July 3, Greater Sudbury Police were called about a man sitting in the back of a bus with what has been described as a rifle. Officers were able to stop the bus, escort passengers off, and take the man into custody without incident, said a tweet that afternoon. The man was later charged with firearm-related offences and drug offences. Read the full story here.
Horizon Drive-in event postponed due to heat warning
Horizon Drive-in pop-up movie theatre postponed this weekend’s Downtown Sudbury premier Friday, in response to heat warning-worthy temperatures and humidity. All tickets previously purchased for July 3-4 will now be valid for the July 18-19 weekend, with the same movie lineup. Read the full story here.

Periods of increased cloudiness in the forecast overnight and a 30 per cent chance of showers. Overnight temperatures to float around a low of 19 C.
