Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Sudbury.com live at Top Glove: Sudbury, Italy square off in the ring Thursday night:

Boxing is in Gordon Apolloni's blood. Even while on his honeymoon in Italy in May, with his sweetheart on his arm, the sweet science was not far from his mind. The Top Glove Boxing Academy owner met with up with former Sudbury-based boxer Ivan Cancellieri, who now coaches boxing in Italy. The two got to talking, and plans were put in motion for a team of Italian boxers to travel to the Nickel City for a night of fights. Top Glove Boxing and Panoramic Properties will present live Olympic-style boxing on Sept. 20 inside the Kevin Houle Memorial Auditorium, located in Top Glove's gym on Lasalle Boulevard. Four boxers from Riccione, Italy will square off with local pugilists, and there are three more bouts on the card for a total of seven fights on the evening. The event is sold out, with a capacity crowd of 240 expected to pack the auditorium. Did you miss the chance to grab tickets? Not to worry, as Sudbury.com will be bringing you all the action, live on our website, starting at 8 p.m.

MOL investigating: Worker was offloading utility pole when he was killed:

A 58-year-old man who was an employee of R.M. Belanger Limited was killed Sept. 17 after he was struck by a hydro pole while offloading it from the bed of a tractor trailer, the Ministry of Labour confirms. The incident took place at the Forest Ridge Golf Course in Chelmsford around 1:55 p.m. The worker was transported to hospital and subsequently pronounced dead, said an email from Ministry of Labour spokesperson Janet Deline. Ministry of Labour inspectors and an engineer attended the scene, and as a result, six orders were issued to R.M. Belanger Limited. These relate to operating manuals for equipment, the inspection of equipment by a competent worker and providing information, instruction and supervision to a worker. Stop-work orders are in effect until the issues detailed in these orders have been addressed.

Election recap from Wednesday, Sept. 19:

More news from the campaign trails Wednedsay, as candidates continue their push for a seat on council or the mayor's chair. The incumbent councillor for Ward 1 says beautification and property standards — from neglected properties to flower beds to cracks in sidewalks — must be a priority. In a news release this week, Mark Signoretti commended all those in the city who work to keep the Nickel City looking its best. “I would like to take this time and commend all the CANs, cleanup campaign organizers, individuals and businesses, playground associations, community garden groups, lake stewardship organizations, and our wonderful Parks staff, and others, for continuing a tradition of beautification in Greater Sudbury," said Signoretti. "We are world famous for our re-greening efforts of the last many decades that have positively shifted the world’s view of our City. We have a lot to be proud of.” Ward 5 candidate Jerry Desormeaux says if he is elected he would push for the city to do more with affordable housing for senior citizens and people living with dementia. In a recent news release, the candidate said he has a few ideas when it comes to affordable, or social, housing. “The idea of adjusting a seniors property taxes according to their income to keep them in their homes and install a tax freeze for them,” Desormeaux said. “We could then have job creations to assist them – ie:  lawn care, property maintenance, snow removal, home cleaning services, companionship, help with cooking.” He also said the city could look at so-called “dementia villages” like one operating in Norway as a new way of caring for people living with the condition. Ward 11 candidate Bill Leduc released a 'getting to know you' style statement on Wednesday, where he answered seven questions including why he's running, what his priorities are, what are the city's most pressing issues and some personal questions like who has inspired him and how he spends his downtime. Ward 11 candidate John Lindsay says he's disappointed in the election platforms of fellow candidates running in the Oct. 22 municipal election. Voters need to hear specific ideas, Lindsay says, on how candidates will keep taxes down. Lindsay challenged his fellow candidates to offer specifics on such topics as shrinking the size of local government, completing Maley Drive and whether to keep funding the Kingsway Entertainment District. “I encourage all candidates to respond to these questions so citizens will be better able to make responsible voting decisions,” he said.

You may hear some explosions next week due to military training:

The public is being advised that there will be training training exercises conducted by the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR) in the vicinity of Greater Sudbury, near Walden, from Sept. 23 – Oct. 3. Residents may see and hear uniformed military personnel with weapons, military aircraft and the use of low-level explosives. "All efforts will be made to ensure that disruption to the community will be at a minimum," said the Canadian Armed Forces in a news release. "(Citizens) shouldn’t see a lot of vehicles. Typically we use civilian-patterned vehicles. We may use the Ultra Light Combat Vehicle, which is essentially a military version of an all-terrain vehicle. As well, people may see military aircraft such as planes or helicopters."
