Seven people arrested as police seize $122K worth of Fentanyl in Sudbury:
Seven people have been arrested as more than 3,000 street-level doses of Fentanyl have been seized by Greater Sudbury Police Service. In November of 2019, the Greater Sudbury Police Integrated Crime Team (ICT), working in collaboration with the Ontario Provincial Police Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB) started multiple investigations, with the intention to disrupt drug trafficking operations entering and operating within the City of Greater Sudbury. Shortly after 1 p.m. on Jan. 23, officers from the Greater Sudbury Police ICT and tactical unit, along with the Ontario Provincial Police OCEB and OPP North East Region Community Street Crime Unit, executed search warrants at six locations across Greater Sudbury. Video: Possible water main break flooding Elgin Street:
Elgin Street in the downtown looked more like Junction Creek than a roadway on Friday afternoon. Staff at Sudbury.com/Northern Life noticed high rising waters outside our office at 158 Elgin around 4 p.m. Friday. Upon closer inspection, it appeared the source may have be a pipe or water main burst in the YMCA parking lot located across from our building. 3-1-1 has been contacted and city crew responded. Victims have both their vehicles stolen, left in snowbanks on Lasalle in the same morning:
Greater Sudbury Police Service say a suspect is still at large after two stolen vehicles ended up in snowbanks on Lasalle Boulevard Friday morning. At around 7 a.m. on Jan. 24, GSPS received a call regarding a vehicle stolen from the owner's driveway. "The suspect drove away with their vehicle then subsequently had a collision on Lasalle Blvd in front of CAS," GSPS said in a tweet. "Upon discovering their vehicle had been stolen, the complainants went looking for it. Upon discovering their vehicle and having contact with the suspect, the suspect managed to steal a second vehicle." After stealing the second vehicle, the suspect subsequently crashed into another snowbank - this time in front of the Lasalle Dental Clinic at the corner of Arthur Street. Solidarity with Wet’suwet’en march could cause traffic delays downtown Sunday:
The Greater Sudbury Police Service is advising the public of possible traffic disruptions on Sunday, Jan. 26, around 11 a.m. in the downtown core of Greater Sudbury. Members from “Solidarity with Wet’suwet’en” are planning a march leaving from the Courthouse at 155 Elm St. The expected route for this march will affect the flow traffic on the following roadways: Elm Street, Paris Street, Brady Street, and Minto Street. It is anticipated that a Round Dance may occur at the intersections for a brief few minutes. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. and is expected to conclude around 1 p.m. at Tom Davies Square. Motorists may encounter traffic delays in the downtown core during that time.
Update: Greater Sudbury is under a freezing rain warning:
Environment Canada upgraded a special weather statement that was issued Friday morning to a freezing rain warning. Freezing rain is expected into Saturday morning. With temperatures hovering near the freezing mark, some of this precipitation may begin as rain or snow. Ice accretion amounts up to 5 mm are possible. Freezing rain will change to snow near midday with near 5 cm of snowfall expected by Sunday morning. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
Downtown Sudbury snow removal begins Sunday:
City crews are getting ready to begin snow removal in downtown Sudbury in order to widen traffic lanes and improve access. The work will be done from Sunday, Jan. 26 to Friday, Jan. 31, from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. each day, weather permitting. The work has been scheduled to cause the least amount of inconvenience for downtown businesses and customers. Check out the snow removal schedule here.
Wolves and Five at home this weekend:
There's a full slate of sports at the Sudbury this weekend as the Wolves and the Five are at home. The Sudbury Wolves will take on their northern rivals from Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday as the Greyhounds pay a visit to the Nickel City. Puck drop is 7:05 p.m. on a Sudbury Saturday Night. On Sunday, the ice will make way for the hardwood as the Sudbury Five welcome the Windsor Express to the Sudbury Arena. The Five sit a half game back of the Express in the Central Division. Tip off is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
