Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Health Sciences North to start resuming clinical care services next week:

Health Sciences North is set to begin the process of clearing a queue of thousands of scheduled surgeries that were postponed due to COVID-19. Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, medical officer of health at Public Health Sudbury & Districts over the weekend, confirmed over the weekend that the required criteria were met ion the community for the hospital to resume elective surgeries and non-urgent procedures. In mid-March, Ontario hospitals were directed by the Minister of Health to cease non-urgent elective surgeries and procedures. In the months that have passed since that direction was given, HSN postponed more than 4,400 non-urgent scheduled surgeries and minor procedures. During that period, more than 1,000 emergency surgeries and necessary procedures were performed. The re-introduction of clinical services at the hospital will be a gradual one, HSN president and CEO Dominic Giroux told Sudbury.com Wednesday, with the first phase of the recovery plan focusing on the reintroduction of surgical and cardiac procedures and tests where patients generally require 48 hours to recover in hospital. This will include up to about 200 surgical cases per week, or 60 per cent of the hospital's normal activity. Get the full story here.

HSN CEO touts Sudbury’s country-leading COVID-19 testing efforts:

Sudbury is above the bar when it comes to testing for COVID-19 in comparison to the rest of Ontario and the country, said the CEO of Health Sciences North. Dominic Giroux tweeted May 24 that Sudubry and Districts had 10,200 tests conducted for 207,004 residents, or 4,927/100,000 residents. In comparison, across the province, as of the date of Giroux’s tweet on May 24 , 611,369 tests were conducted for 14,830,914 residents or 4,122 tests per 100,000 residents. Canada-wide, 1,459,212 tests have been conducted for 37,894,799 residents, or 3,851 tests per 100,000 residents. “Let’s keep it up,” Giroux said in his tweet. HSN has the capacity to test hundreds more people for COVID-19. As such, patients with any symptoms must call HSN’s COVID-19 Assessment Center between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., seven days/week at 705-671-7373. No one who is symptomatic or who is concerned they have been exposed to COVID-19 will be declined a test at the assessment centre.

Video: Sudbury dad's unbelievable trick shot videos are a welcome pandemic distraction:

Ryan Pawlowski thinks of himself as just an average dad with an above average shot. The Sudbury resident started filming his own "highlight reel" as a way to keep his young sons entertained. Little did he know, five years later, his shots on a Little Tykes basketball net would evolve into more elaborate trick shots and serve as a welcome distraction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pawlowski's channel "You Know What I'm Saying Tricks" includes dozens of videos of him sinking shots into his kids' basketball net. He's made shots over his roof, deflected the ball into the net off of stair railings and pulled off countless behind-the-back blind shots. Check out the compilation video here.

City extends due date for interim property taxes:

The City of Greater Sudbury is helping residents navigate the COVID-19 situation by providing a further extension of the second due date for interim property taxes. Penalties and interest on late payments will not be charged if amounts owed for the April 2, 2020, interim property tax deadline are paid by July 2. The original extension was to June 4. “I am pleased to offer residents this option for the 2020 interim tax bill,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger. “In providing this extension for residents, I hope to help reduce additional stress and bring some peace of mind for those who may be experiencing financial strain during this unprecedented time.” The deadline for final 2020 property taxes is anticipated to be delayed until early fall. The revised schedule is being determined and will be shared at a later date.

Cyclist seriously hurt after being struck by vehicle in Hanmer:

A cyclist received serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Cote Boulevard in Hanmer Tuesday night. Greater Sudbury Police said they were called out to the collision just after 10:50 p.m. May 26. A vehicle was travelling on Cote Boulevard when it struck a cyclist. The cyclist was transported to hospital with serious injuries by paramedics. The roadway was closed for several hours as the traffic management unit investigated the collision, but was reopened as of around 5:30 a.m. Anyone with information related to the collision is asked to contact the Greater Sudbury Police traffic management unit at 705-675-9171, ext. 2307.

Jazz Sudbury announces cancellation of 2020 festival:

Jazz Sudbury has “regretfully” announced the cancellation of its 2020 festival, which was supposed to take place Aug. 5-9 this summer. The festival — just the latest here in Greater Sudbury to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic — will be replaced this year with alternative programming that will be announced in the upcoming months, said a press release. Jazz Sudbury’s priority is the health and well-being of the patrons and artists that attend the festival, so the annual festival will resume once it is safe to do so, said a press release. “Jazz Sudbury Festival organizers are devastated regarding the cancellation of the event and hope to return to regular programming in 2021,” the press release added. “We are heartbroken to not be able to gather with our community on the shores of Ramsey Lake and in our stellar downtown venues this year. We are certain that Sudbury Jazz Festival 2021 will be a reunion for the ages,” said festival director Katherine Smith. Each year, Jazz Sudbury Festival hosts a variety of local, regional, national and international artists among multiple local venues throughout the weekend.
