Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Ministry orders Glencore to beef up safety:

The Ministry of Labour has ordered a number of work stoppages at Glencore to enhance safety at their Falconbridge plant. On May 9, three people were injured, one critically in an industrial accident at Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations. A 56-year old man was transported to hospital in critical condition on May 9, and a 55-year old man and 46-year old man were treated by paramedics for non-life threatening injuries. On May 11, ministry inspectors and a ministry engineer attended the workplace. "Four requirements were issued to Glencore for documentation and equipment," said Ministry spokesperson Janet Deline. "Three requirements have been complied with, one of the requirements for documentation is in progress." On May 14, inspectors once again attended Glencore, where they issued 26 orders, including for hand rails (with related stop work orders), for equipment to be inspected (with related stop work order), for documentation and personal protective equipment (with a related stop work order). Of the 26 orders, six have been complied with and 20 remain in progress. The Ministry of Labour met with Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations on May 22 and one requirement was issued for documentation. The investigation is ongoing.

Light up the night with Relay for Life luminaries:

The Canadian Cancer Society is gearing up for its 19th annual Relay for Life fundraiser. The organization is kicking off the campaign tonight at Twiggs Coffee Roasters by selling luminaries and providing live entertainment. The luminaries will be set up on the patio at Twiggs, overlooking The Kingsway, and lighting up the night sky. Luminaries are an important aspect of the Relay for Life event. People purchase luminaries to honour those who lost their fight against cancer, and to honour those still fighting. Luminaries are $5 each. MacKenzie Dempster, volunteer communications and outreach lead with the Canadian Cancer Society, said people are starting to get excited about the Relay for Life event, taking place June 15 at the Laurentian University track. Opening ceremonies are at 7 p.m. followed by the Survivor Lap. The Luminary Ceremony happens at 10 p.m., and the Canadian Cancer Society wants to sell more luminaries than ever before.

Cards Crush Cancer: Who knew fundraising could be this fun?

With temperatures reaching the high 20s on a beautiful spring day, the weather was perfect May 24 for the first ever Cards Crush Cancer fundraising event. Much of the student body was out on the school's sports field, taking part in a variety of fun outdoor activities in support of the Northern Cancer Foundation. Organizers hoped to raise at least $10,000 for local cancer care and research. Students were invited to buy their way out of class by purchasing a $20 t-shirt or a $10 wristband. Activities included bubble soccer, a water balloon fight, Zumba and music performances by students. Several students planned to cut their hair to be made into wigs for cancer patients. There were also three food vendors on site who donated a portion of proceeds to the Northern Cancer Foundation.

CFL comes a callin' on Jacob Czaja:

The end goal may not have always been crystal clear for former Lo-Ellen Park lineman Jacob Czaja (pronounced ‘chai-a’). But when football became his one primary focus, there was simply no denying the Lively native. The recent graduate of St. Francis Xavier University became the first local product to be drafted by a CFL (Canadian Football League) team since Kyle Kirkwood was selected in 2007, with Czaja getting picked by the Ottawa Redblacks in the eighth round of the 2018 draft in April.

Nykilchyk and company raise the bar on day one of track and field championships:

When a pole vault record is broken at the SDSSAA Track & Field Championships, one generally has to look no further than a former or current gymnast. It's an assumption that holds true, far more often than not. Someone forgot to send that script to Lockerby Composite senior Hannah Nykilchyk. Blessed with a primary sports background in hockey and golf, the 17-year-old grade 11 student wandered into the pole vault scene back in grade nine. Late Wednesday afternoon, Nykilchyk broke the senior girls pole vault record of 2.70 meters, clearing the bar at 2.71m and just missing at 2.74m. Her performance was but one of the many noteworthy results on day one of the city meet, with a total of eight records erased from the books. Check out all the results here.

Downtown Blues for Food happens June 9:

The fact Downtown Rotary Blues for Food has been happening for 28 years now, and the fact the Sudbury Food Bank has been the beneficiary since Day 1, reinforces the need for the food bank will be around for a long time, said the executive director of the Downtown BIA. Maureen Luoma said she's happy her organization can play a bit of a role in filling the shelves. Since its inception, Downtown Blues for Food has raised $300,000 and collected more than 68 tons of food items to help feed the hungry. On June 9, the popular music showcase returns to Durham Street, bringing with it nine local bands to entertain the hundreds who attend. The lineup is comprised of Johnny Williams and Kelsey, Low Guns, Zamboni Slim, Ace & The Cobras, The Dazed, Elijah and the Blackburners, Coldshot, Tommy Fyfe & The Whiskey River Blues Band and the Bluez Brotherz Tirbute Band.
