Roger and Therese Sirois of Garson are celebrating after winning the jackpot, worth $9,333,580.80, from the July 11 LOTTO 6/49 draw. “We’ve been playing LOTTO 6/49 since it started,” said the couple of 50 years, while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up their cheque. “We also enjoy LOTTARIO, DAILY GRAND and POKER LOTTO.” Having played LOTTO 6/49 every Wednesday since 1982, their ticket purchase for the July 11 draw was like any other Wednesday, with one Quick Pick and one ticket with their own numbers. MNR recommends mandatory evacuation of Key River area due to forest fire risks:
The Ministry of Natural Resources has recommended a mandatory evacuation in the Key River area as a precaution due to the proximity of the Parry Sound 33 forest fire and the hot, dry and windy conditions. This area is boat access only, and residents will be exiting the area using the nearby waterway. Residents are being instructed to get in their boats and move upriver to Key Harbour Landing, then leave the area by vehicle. The OPP and Conservation Officers are currently onsite helping notify the public of the situation, and facilitating this evacuation. The situation is developing and more information will be released as it becomes available.
GSPS reviewing incident involving bear cub shot by police on Skead Road:
Video and photos of what appears to be a bear cub struggling to stand at the side of the road after being hit by a vehicle are circulating on social media. An outpouring of grief has followed, as the video and photos were taken within an hour of the bear being shot by police. Police said the decision to dispatch the cub was made in order to end its suffering. "Both the MNRF and the City were contacted by our Communications Centre, but we were informed they would not be attending," Greater Sudbury Police wrote on Facebook. "This is not a situation that any officer wants to be in and the Police Service attempted to find an alternative before the Officers made the decision to dispatch the cub." Heat warning: Temperatures expected to reach 30 C today:
A heat warning is in effect for Greater Sudbury and vicinity. Hot and humid conditions are expected through the weekend, said the warning, issued by Environment Canada at around 5 a.m. Friday. A hot and humid air mass has moved into the area, and will remain in place through the weekend. Daytime highs are expected to reach near 30 C. Overnight lows are expected to be near 18 C, providing little relief from the heat. Daytime highs may remain near 30 C through early next week.
Education minister, MPP meet about banned Rainbow board trustee Larry Killens:
In the wake of the Rainbow District School Board's banning of trustee Larry Killens, Algoma-Manitoulin NDP MPP Mike Mantha has met with Education Minister Lisa Thompson about the situation. The board accuses Killens, who is from Manitoulin Island, of actions including sharing confidential information and making “false and disparaging” comments about fellow trustees and Rainbow board staff. On July 3, he was banned by his fellow trustees from all Rainbow board meetings until Nov. 30, which represents the rest of his term. For his part, Killens denies the accusations, saying they're “unproven, untrue and hold no substance.” More on this story can be found here.
Man nabbed after trying to cash cheque he allegedly stole from Riverside Drive business:
A 28-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly trying to cash a cheque he stole after breaking into a Riverside Drive business. At around 5:40 a.m. July 18, Greater Sudbury Police were called out to the Riverside Drive business in relation to an alarm. Officers found that the business had been broken into and various items taken. The suspect had fled before police arrived. Police obtained video surveillance footage and a description of the person responsible. Later that day, a man matching the description entered an establishment downtown and attempted to cash a cheque that was reported stolen from the break and enter earlier that day. Officers from the Break, Enter and Robbery (B.E.A.R.) Unit located the man and arrested him without incident. Two stolen cheques were found in the man’s possession. The suspect has been charged with one count of break, enter and theft and one count of stolen property obtained by crime.
