Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Stalled system has frustrated Sudbury landlords demanding action:

A group of frustrated Sudbury landlords took to the streets in front of Tom Davies Square on Oct. 27 to express their displeasure with the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB). Organized by Greater Sudbury Landlord Association president Ray Goulet, the protest drew more than a dozen local landlords who say they have been struggling with problematic tenants and have seen little to no response from the LTB. "We want to bring attention to the LTB that we're not getting enough hearings. There are so many tenants that are in arrears, six months, ten months, and we still can't get hearing for eviction," said Goulet. "Bill 184 really hasn't done us any good because the LTB isn't getting off their behinds to service landlords the way they should be." Dubbed the "eviction bill" by tenants, Bill 184 is a collection of amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act that were put in place to allow corporate landlords to more easily evict problematic tenants. The landlords gathered on Tuesday, however, are not corporate landlords, but residential landlords who are renting out their own properties. Get the full story here.

Ontario LTC commission: Hire more nursing home staff ASAP — no further study needed:

Ontario's Long-Term Care COVID-19 Commission has called for hiring more front-line care staff, enough to provide a minimum daily average of four hours of direct care per patient per day. Along with that, the commission is pushing for the creation of a comprehensive human resources strategy to address the full range of staffing issues in Ontario's nursing homes. It said no further study is required. It said timely implementation should be carried out now. The Commission released five recommendations Friday as part of its first interim report to the Ontario government since it began holding hearings on long-term care (LTC) back in the first week of September. The OHC said the recommendations also validate its own long-standing call for the minimum of four hours of daily direct care for each LTC patient. More on this story can be found here

Missing hunters found in good health, says provincial police:

Two people, one of which was an eight-year-old, were found in good health after becoming lost while out hunting on Oct. 25, said provincial police. A 39-year-old person from Nepean and the eight-year-old from Mountain went bird hunting around noon, but did not return to their remote hunting camp on Bushtail Lake, off Highway 144 (Metagama Road), in Chalet Township. Prior to calling police, family members searched the area and found their all-terrain vehicle on a trail near Elspie Creek in Cavana Township. Due to inclement weather, the OPP Aviation Services-Helicopter Section was unable to attend and the OPP Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) was ineffective. The OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) searched the area throughout the night. On Oct. 26 at 8:55 a.m., after a seven-kilometre trek through the dense forest, ERT members located the missing persons in good health. They were able to make a fire to keep warm throughout the night. They were able to walk out of the bush on their own, where they were checked over by paramedics as a precaution.

Police identify 66-year-old Killarney-area man as victim of a fatal boating mishap:

Ontario Provincial Police are investigating the boating death of a 66-year-old Killarney resident. Members of the Nipissing West (Noëlville) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police said they received a report Saturday, Oct. 24 of an overturned vessel in Georgian Bay. The report was from a local resident en-route to check on the boat which could be seen on a shoal in the area known as "The Chickens" at the mouth of Beaverstone Bay, in the Municipality of Killarney. Beaverstone Bay is about 24 kilometres east of the Killarney village. Prior to police arrival, the caller located and recovered the boater, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Manitoulin OPP Marine Unit and the Canadian Coast Guard attended the scene to assist. Police said the deceased has been identified as Kevin Boggs, age 66, from Baltzly Island, which is located in the Beaverstone Bay area of the Municipality of Killarney. A post mortem examination is scheduled for Oct. 27 in Sudbury. The investigation is continuing under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS). Foul play is not suspected, said police.

Hospital 50/50 draw success allows for purchase of new equipment:

The success of the 50/50 cash lottery at Health Sciences North has resulted in raising enough money for the purchase of a new breast vacuum biopsy system for the Breast Screening and Assessment Service (BSAS) and two new Infant Incubators for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The fundraising was carried out by the HSN Foundation along with NEO Kids Foundation, the Northern Cancer Foundation and the HSN Volunteer Association, which raised $150,000 through the 50/50 Cash Lottery for the North. While government funding covers the operating costs of hospitals, the purchase of new medical equipment is the responsibility of the hospital. HSN said the infant incubators are used to regulate the temperature of prematurely born babies, providing a stable environment for the child to develop. The two incubators being purchased are specifically for travel purposes, allowing babies to be brought back to their home communities for further care closer to home said the hospital.
