Let’s eat! New Sudbury parlour offers ice cream with a twist (a swirl actually)

Vishwa and Sahil Patel missed the cool sweet treats they could get in Gujarat, India, so the Sudbury couple opened Sweet Swirls to bring those treats to the Nickel City

You’d think ice cream is a hot summer day treat, but Vishwa and Sahil Patel would tell you that is not the case in Sudbury.

Ten months ago, the married couple opened Sweet Swirls in New Sudbury on Lasalle Boulevard.

“In the first eight months of business, we had already served 16,000 treats,” Vishwa said.

“We’ve had a really great response,” Sahil added.

While they have other careers, both have a sweet tooth and felt Sudbury was lacking in the creative desserts department.

They make and blend their ice cream using Farquhars’ cream and a cold plate. In addition to bowls and waffle cones, they have introduced patrons to waffle sticks and pocket waffles, trends popular in India a few years ago that they wanted to bring here.

They offer standard and premium rolled ice creams.

Standard rolls include famous chocolate bar flavours, Biscoff, Cinnamon Crunch and berries.

Premium rolls include matcha madness, birthday cake, pina colada and four traditional Indian sweet flavours like Rasmalai made with sweetened milk and lemons and the Cashew and Rose-Jam treat.

Sahil loves the cashew and rose-jam in a cup best because it brings him fond memories of home in India. Vishwa prefers the Biscoff-caramel flavoured biscuits crumbs rolled in her ice cream.

They also offer a menu of milkshakes, paninis and other snacks.

The married couple are both from Gujarat in western India and met while working at a Tim Hortons in Sudbury.

Sahil, who started studying nursing at Cambrian College in 2017, now balances work in long-term care, the business and is now back to the books with a two-year Health and Safety certificate program.

Vishwa, who studied computers at Laurentian University, works in information technology with the federal government and also develops the recipes and creations for Sweet Swirls.

To say their plates are full is an understatement, so they rely on a team of staff under the direction of Vishwa’s brother Harshil Patel.

Sweets Swirls offers a wide array of toppings for customers, and all ice cream comes with a vegan option. They also sell frozen yogurt, and prepared cheesecakes from the Cheesecake Factory.

This summer, they will add to the menu by offering banana and nutella rolled ice cream combinations.

It’s also available on Uber, Skip the Dishes and DoorDash. Rolled ice cream doesn’t melt as fast, which means it will arrive in the same state it was prepared.

Sweet Swirls is open Sunday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. with extended hours  Friday and Saturday, from 12 noon to 12 midnight. The ice cream shop is located at 1895 Lasalle Blvd.
