Let’s Eat: Perennial favourite M.I.C. celebrates Canadian cuisine

Try the ‘John Candy’ burger, featuring deep-fried mac & cheese, back bacon, smoked cheese and spicy ketchup

Wrap yourself in the flag and get over to M.I.C. Canadian Eatery & Whisky Pub on Falconbridge at The Kingsway.

With the tagline “Canadian Food Done Right,” this is a definite must for entertaining visitors, and for sea-to-sea flavours too (let’s not neglect all the provinces and territories in between). This restaurant pleases everyone. Yes, they even have lobster.

Truly all-encompassing menu choices will satisfy kids and adults, or even an office of diverse desires. Of course since March take-out has been popular way to experience M.I.C.

Made-in house, and thoroughly test-driven, each plate “has got to taste great, or we won’t do it!” states co-owner Dave Gagnon. Because we can build the Canadarm, this fun diner assembles classic tastes of our country in ways both playful and skillful.

Winning awards for excellence is wonderful, but it is the constant commitment to regulars and new fans that validates the 10-year adventure which is M.I.C.

“Family, local, loved,” are words you will hear when people describe M.I.C. Some staff members have been here for 16 or more years and welcome customers warmly by first name; like friends and family.

“We both grew up here,” said Gagnon; and he really means it. He started at 13 in this industry, and has been here in this place since he was 17.

“I’ve been here in this building for over 23 years,” he said. “The walls, the music, the food… it’s a sort of history of our nation. There are pictures of the people in the news over the decades, and, yes, classic photographs of Sudbury. We are proud to be in Sudbury. We work hard and we are honored to do what we do!”

Relaxed, casual, with a cottage-like feel, this is a come-as-you-are, laid-back place for Tuxes or T-Shirts, patent leather or flip-flops. It’s paradoxically big but cozy.

Throughout the summer, there is even a patio. A little chilled? Choose a table by the fire indoors. Private dining spaces feature images of sports heros, innovators and business tycoons, and the “log cabin” in the middle of it all completes the mood.

And don’t forget the Whiskey Pub. “We carry all the Canadian whiskeys we can get our hands on that are listed in this province. We are told we are Northern Ontario’s best stocked!” Gagnon said.

Once the home of the Greyhound Bus Depot, “it was a hub then… and it continues to be!” states co-owner Chad Pitfield.

“We both - Dave and I - love to cook, and that passion to be part of the exceptional nature of this place means we step up and play active roles both back and front of house. That’s teamwork and leadership.

“We understand and have confidence in every employee. We pick up plates and are very hands-on and visible.”

When asked about the impact of COVID-19, Pitfield talks about pivoting and preparedness. “We released this menu just before the pandemic. We never shut our doors. We adapted and made take-out a stronger focus. We sanitize everything, and you can just use your smartphone for touchless service.”

Yes, right at the table there are QR codes that connect you to the menus for lunch and dinner.

Choosing the “Calgary Stampede Dip,” hand-made burgers, or smokey ribs, is just too easy. Of course, they have other national and regional classics: “We can’t remember the first day we served poutine, but it is definitely Canadiana,” laughs Gagnon.

You might select the single or multi stacked patties of beef that are the “Crazy Canuck” with its bacon, caramelized onions, mozzarella cheese, the famous Crazy Canuck sauce and ranch dressing.

Bet you could adapt or add the legendary whiskey BBQ sauce. More temptation lurks in the burger selection: try the “John Candy” featuring deep-fried mac & cheese, back bacon, smoked cheese and spicy ketchup.

Vegetarian and gluten free options are not just afterthoughts. There is also a placard at the door of the feature of the day. Remember all the choices are made on site; made in Canada!
