You could say the secret to success for The Cake Guy in Sudbury is all in the luscious buttercream frosting.
“It seems to be the showstopper,” said Michael Sauvé who has perfected a light and fluffy swiss meringue buttercream icing that is not too sweet and melts in your mouth.
Sauvé’s perfectly frosted cupcakes are part of a fundraiser supporting heart care at Health Sciences North — February being Heart Month in Canada.
Customers who stop in to buy a half-dozen cupcakes in his little pink shop that overlooks Regent Street in the South End (near The Daventry) will support the purchasing of two new echocardiogram machines.
Sauvé said so many people with personal connections to heart health have been coming in to buy cupcakes for their families and office staff.
He added that Health Sciences North is also near and dear to his heart, as his partner is a physician and family members are nurses working the ICU and other locations.
“It made natural sense to team up with the HSN Foundation,” he said.
This particular week, the cupcakes are an assortment of cookies and cream, black forest, lemon raspberry and orange creamsicle.
The menu changes every Monday for the given week and it’s posted online for walk-in customers to decide what they want.
Sauvé began the cake and cupcake venture about seven years ago.
“After studying culinary at George Brown College, my partner encouraged me to pursue my passion so I started by running the business in the house. It blew up fast but the boxes, supplies and orders started to take over the house,” he said.
“Once I finished baking and icing at home, I would have two hours of emails to weed through so I moved to a storefront operation to have a bit of separation from my home and personal life.”
Five years ago he moved to the pink house that used to be a Cortina Pizza location.
He’s also now added a head baker to the business. Olyvia Paparo bakes the cake and cupcake bases for Sauvé to masterfully ice and fill accordingly.
The business offered custom orders in the past but Sauvé said there seems to be more success in a walk-in style business which started last January.
Sauvé said after seven years, people have come to enjoy the taste, the quality and the fact that each cupcake or cake is made with love.
Customers interested in supporting cardiac care as well as their love of cupcakes or cakes can stop into the storefront at 1582 Regent St. between Tuesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
D & A Fine Meats on Paris Street is also well stocked with cupcakes if that location is more convenient for customers.
