I find the NorthernLife.ca news poll question
regarding a Christmas season campaign interesting. Although
most people will say they are not in favour of it, when the
election call is made, the majority will do their civic duty
that was fought for by our veterans and get out to vote. The
Liberals are the ones who are, as usual, trying to dare the
opposition into disrupting the Christmas season by having a
much needed election to save their sorry butts. The Liberals
didn't think twice about bringing Clark's government
down in December 1979.
Paul Martin has already started the campaign
using our tax dollars to bribe voters and to lay the ground
work for the scare campaign about how the Conservatives will
wipe out any benefits his government proposes. All of a sudden
the surplus has ballooned to epic proportions just in time for
a stand-off that is the greatest threat to Martin's tenure
as prime minister. One of reasonable thinking would have to
assume the money from over-taxation has always been there, it
was just saved for a moment like this.
If we have to have an election campaign
during the Christmas season, it will be put on hold during the
important week, as it was in 1979. Think of those veterans who
spent their Christmas in the trenches so that we may be able to
take half an hour to mark a ballot or seeing commercials that
do nothing but exploit the true meaning of Christmas. It is the
year of the veteran, so just suck it up and fulfill your civic
duty they fought for.
