As most Canadians and Americans know by now, the Sudbury, Ont., born Alex Trebek announced his Stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis.

According to the Canadian Press, he has maintained a positive tone despite the grim prognosis.

Alex Trebek is one of the most well-known people to come from Sudbury. For those who don’t know, Alex Trebek has won several Emmy Awards for his matter-of-fact style and genial personality.  He also became an officer of the Order of Canada in 2017 in recognition of his “iconic television work” and his commitment to educational, environmental and humanitarian causes.  He has been working in TV for more than 50 years.

Social media has been flooded with tributes for Alex Trebek after his announcement. There is no question Alex Trebek will be the face of pancreatic cancer.

Born a Sudburian as well, I believe we should be proud of the man and as a community find a way to honour him in light of his announcement.

Alex Trebek says “all he wants is the love and support of his family and friends, and with the help of prayers, he plans to beat the low survival rate.”
