Small army of 26 participants make it another tremendous success

Our small crew of 26 raised over $21,200 for the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation Canada on Sunday, June 9. We were blessed with a beautiful warm sunny day.

Dwayne Backer outdid himself again, raising $13.389. This year, he reached out to 295 people.  Dwayne is a wonderful ambassador for raising awareness of dystonia while he raises much-needed funds for research.

This year, Dwayne started in March and reached out to the Royal Bank in Hanmer. Their Benevity program sponsored Dwayne for $1,000, and volunteers from the branch joined in the walk.

Congratulations, Dwayne, on overcoming the adversity of your dystonia and doing a great job.

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that causes muscles to pull or spasm. It can be very painful and debilitating. It can affect your eyes, neck, jaw, speech, hands and limbs. There is yet no cure. There are some drug treatments, Botox injections help and in severe cases there is deep brain stimulation surgery. Hence, the importance for research.

Top prize winners for the most pledges obtained were 1) Dwayne Backer 2) Richard & Mary Guy 3) Coco Lariviere and 4) Lauraine Blais. These prizes were donated by DMRF Canada. Congratulations to all of you.

A very special thank you to Topper’s Pizza and the Toppazzini family for donating pizza for our hungry walkers. Chris YIG provided a gift certificate, which allowed us to quench our thirst with water and watermelon and an added bonus of cookies.

Door prizes were donated by Barrydowne Paint & Wallpaper, Foothills Farm, Querney’s Office Plus, The Rainville Clan, and Scotiabank. Thank you to all the donors for your generosity.

Thank you to our experienced desk crew of Lise Depatie, Sue Leroux and Brenda Morris for setting things up and keeping track of the walkers and the money that they brought in. Everyone was so helpful, and it made set up and take down a breeze.

A very big thank you to everyone who sponsored our walkers and everyone who helped in making the walk such a success.
