Editor's note: This letter is in response to the story, “City ends free bus rides for seniors.”

Mr. Al Sizer says he would rather have the money directed toward Sudburians who really need it.

Is he suggesting seniors have lots of money? He must not be aware that many seniors live below the poverty level in Canada. They survive on old age security, and, if lucky, on Canada pension retirement.

Due to the increase in cost of living, Hydro and transportation, they cannot afford nutritional food.

The government gave Sudbury thousands of dollars to improve bus routes and to do repairs to the aging bus terminal. Council, instead, opted to spend the money to purchase new buses.

I have tried repeatedly to reach Ward 4 Coun. Evelyn Dutrisac. I have left messages, with no return calls from her.

I am tired of increasing costs, increasing taxes and poor excuses from council.

The program that allowed seniors to ride free on Monday gave them an outing to shop, socialize, attend medical appointments and for many just to escape the loneliness of living alone.

Shame on council. Seniors have contributed financially to this community for many years.

Reinstate the program, because seniors deserve it.
