All candidates in the forthcoming municipal election should take particular note of the comments of veteran former Sudbury politician Jim Gordon in a recent newspaper story, in which he urges maintenance of present civic services and infrastructure, and caution with respect to big capital projects.

In support of this is the city value statement “to maintain our resources efficiently, responsibly and effectively” and the provincial Policy Statement 1.1.3, which applies to all municipalities, and states “it is in the interest of all communities to use land and resources wisely, to promote efficient development patterns, protect resources, promote green spaces, ensure effective use of infrastructure and public service facilities and minimize unnecessary public expenditures."

Let us hope that these guidelines will serve as the basis for serious consideration and debate in what could be a most important decision for citizens on Oct. 22.
