In an important step towards reducing our carbon emissions and protecting our community, city council unanimously passed a motion to declare a climate emergency, make action on climate change a priority, and set a course for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

At least 300 citizens of all ages packed council chambers and the foyer at Tom Davies to show their support and celebrate the outcome, backed by 2,398 official signatures from all parts of Greater Sudbury on the climate action petition.

Thank you to Fridays for Future youth for asking council to declare a climate emergency back in February, and to local grandmothers Jane Cox and Carole Lavallée for working to make it happen through their climate action petition.

Thank you to the Greater Sudbury community – this is a moment to be proud of. We care as a community and we show it. Together, we have taken an important step.

Together, we will protect the future of our kids and grandkids, our community, our planet. As a city and as a community, we now begin the work in earnest to reduce our carbon emissions and prepare for climate impacts. It is up to all of us, and we are stronger together. One way to get connected and make a difference is by taking the climate pledge.
