Letter: Conservative plans would harm Sudbury

Re: Letter “Local candidates misleading electorate,” which appeared in Northern Life June 5.

The letter published under this heading contains trenchant criticism of the campaigns of the NDP and Liberal candidates, of the leadership of both parties, and of the Liberal record in office.

There is also brief praise of the remaining candidate’s party – curiously that party is not named – for “its plan to create jobs and put our youth back to work.”

Perhaps it is not surprising that the mention of the Conservative party’s “optimistic plan” is so brief, as the million jobs touted by its leader, Tim Hudak, has been shown to be mythical.

It appears that the leader who feels that there are too many workers in the field of education lacks basic arithmetic skills.

There is also no mention of the all-too-believable plan to cut 100,000 public sector jobs, some of which would certainly affect Sudbury, or of the plan to increase the cost of post-secondary education by removing the rebate currently in place for qualified students.

If the Conservative election platform is implemented, the drain of Sudbury and Ontario’s youth to other provinces is more likely to speed up than to slow down.
